Don't worry about progressing the story. Seeing you react to the side quests, activities, and errands is just as fun. Also, maybe I missed it but there was supposed to be an additional piece of dialog that Aloy should have said about the machines being produced when she overrode the last Cauldron because she got an extra piece of information in the core's data log. Look at the 10th/last log under Machine datapoints to see it. Finally, when you get the last of the Vantage Points be sure to open and read all 12 together. They will give you a complete story about the narrator. Of course, you may want to do that in the codex episode.
And XI isn't 11, It's pronounced SI. The Cauldrons are named after Greek letters, not Roman numerals.

I think you choose the longest cauldron for the night.
I believe the glowing ball that you're inquiring about "what the hell is that?" is a miniature black hole that the cauldrons use as a power source. I can't say much more than that without spoilers, but it nominally makes sense given other technology you'll see.
You shouldn't be there where you fought the Stormbird. One of the last story missions leads to this place. Things like that happens when you decide to ignore the main story for so long. So I recommend to go to Makers end next if you want to prevent such things to happen again, but nice video though
