  1. Washington wasn't very good at stealing bases, even under the tutelage of Maury Wills. I think he only stole 29 bases that year.

  2. October 13, 1974 – Herb Washington, representing the tying run in the top of the ninth is picked off first base by Dodger closer Mike Marshall for the second out of Game 2, the only contest the A's will lose in the Fall Classic. The world-class sprinter, who will never have a plate appearance in his brief 105-game career, was selected by Oakland owner Charlie Finley to become the team's "designated runner," a position that doesn't exist with any other major league club. ~ http://www.nationalpastime.com

  3. Love watching Vin Scully call it RIGHT before it happens, even before it's out of Marshall's hand…

  4. I so remember this game…. Washington ran out to the bullpen to "warm up" around the 7th. For the next two innings they kept cutting to him stretching & doing calisthenics building up the drama. When it ended like this, all anyone could do was laugh. This was the only positive thing the Dodgers had in the series. Thanks for the post 🙂

  5. How is Garvey not in the HOF? I can probably name 30 who have since gotten in who are less deserving.

  6. Damn, I miss Mike Marshall. History has forgotten him, organized baseball hated him as a “Bolshevik” for fighting for the changes that have benefitted generations of players. And, of course, he was too intelligent to be welcomed into the world of professional sports. Bless you, Dr. Marshall, whatever you are…

  7. I did some work for one of these players. He was a pitcher nicknamed "The Creature". His arm would dislocate when he threw the ball. Forgot his real name.

  8. Two things about this video! #1 Garvey should be inducted into the Hall of Fame. #2 The A's must go back to these AMAZING kelly green and gold uniforms!

  9. Camera work was absolutely terrible…most likely intentional. Who needs to see Reggie at the time of the pick? Looks like Marshall flinches front leg

  10. Slowed this video to 12 speed to check Marshall's move, and the voices of Vin and Curt sound like they were drinking liquor all game and are totally smashed…. funny!

  11. Absolutely perfect placement of the throw – two feet off the ground and two feet off of first base. This allowed Garvey to continue the direction of motion of the ball to make the tag. That was important, as Garvey wasn't forced to go back and forth with his glove. Good job by Garvey, too, as this is a harder direction to move your glove if you are a right-handed first baseman (it's a lot easier to "sweep out" with your glove than to sweep it back across your body). Two pros getting the better of one amateur.

  12. And that was the end of any talk of having a designated runner rule that Charly O wanted.

  13. Marshall was a highly intellectual person! He completely played with Washington's mind!

  14. Doug Harvey is the ump, because of course he is. Right on top of the play as always.

  15. This guy used to be my daughters boss @ a Youngstown McDonald’s lol 😂

  16. If only washington was a baseball player.

    He later worked for McDonald’s.

  17. One question I have that maybe someone can clarify is that at 00:42 Marshall takes his stretch, then he fakes a throw to first base. Wouldn't that be a balk? My understanding
of the rule is that once you take the stretch and start a move toward the plate or first base and do not finish it, that is a balk.

  18. They dont have have the instincts to play qb from pocket either….at least the full blooded ones….he brought it up not me

  19. For a man with a grasp of the English language, you’d think Scully would have gone with “inexperience” rather than “immaturity.”

  20. 1:15: “I knew if he was going to try to take that lead Mike was too quick for him.” From any other announcer that would be over the top—ex post facto prescience, arguably partisan as well as presumptive. But Vin Scully was sui generis, no announcer knew the game better, or called it better. I also liked the split screen depicting the dejection of Oakland’s batter when Washington was picked off, reinforcing the commentary about the A’s regard for their ‘running specialist’ who in fact was foisted on the roster by the team’s scatter-brained owner.

  21. Only The Oakland Athletics would have hired a dude to be a designated runner!!
