OCincinnati Reds 3 at Baltimore Orioles 9, F — After a rocky first inning, Cuellar silenced the Reds over the final eight frames to earn a complete game, six-hit victory. Cuellar was backed by home runs by Frank Robinson and Merv Rettenmund, which highlighted a nine-run, 15-hit onslaught that saw every Baltimore position but Brooks Robinson either score or drive in a run. Although Robinson was quiet with the bat, his two diving stops to rob Lee May in the fourth inning, and Johnny Bench in the ninth, capped his one-man highlight reel. With the series win, the Orioles were able to amend for their humbling defeat the hands of the New York Mets in the 1969 World Series and take their second title in five seasons.

The only WS that Earl didn't F up.
If these teams played. 20 games, the orioles woulda won 17….
Managers are so quick to give the hook in the playoffs now I wonder if Cuellar would have made it out of the 1st inning, let alone be allowed to go 9 if the game had been played today. And I think Powell was safe in the 8th inning, he had reason to complain.
How this team won only one of the three in a row they played in is mind boggling. No team in history has had the pitching Baltimore did in 69-71.
Anybody count how many pitches Cuellar threw?
Baltimore won Game 3 and Game 5 both by 9-3
One of my favorite childhood memories.
Reds ran into some bad luck with Wayne Simpson and Jim Merritt both getting sore arms
Great watching this again! I was in 5th grade and my mother wrote me an excuse to leave school so I could come home and watch on t.v. I ran all the way home. I was crushed when we lost in '69 so this was really sweet! Notice how the players just played and there was no hot dogging ! Notice that Frank apologized for saying 'hell' note how fantastic Chuck Thompson was. It was just pure baseball and the game had 12 runs a ton of hits a bunch of Cincinnati pitching changes and it was still played in 2:35…
IF Bobby Grich played in just 30 reg. season games for Orioles in their 1970 World Series-winning season, although he didn't play at all in post-season
Chuck Thompson …… Johnny Ola look alike
Watch Bobby Tolan @ 16:54. He shoes out the entire top of the batter's box without a word from the home plate umpire. He did that every time he came to the plate. I did that in high school and was tossed. I argued that Tolan did that every time he came up to no avail. Dammit, guess we can't emulate our idols!
Back when they played the world series in the day time god the good ol days way before free agency
Most weekday Series games were played during the day. Both in 70 and 71 the teacher brought in a 12 inch black and white TV. I lived in Glen Burnie just south of Baltimore. Great to hear Rex Barney as PA. It was only his second year doing it all the way til 1997
Columbus, Ohio native win or lose the Big Red Machine was the best team of all time. Johnny Bench top 10 of all time
This game was played in 2 hours and 35 minutes. Today it would take at least another hour to play and probably more. Game now is much too slow with less action.
lots of empty seats in the stands for a potential close out game at home. i always felt Baltimore was more of a football town anyway
Some men still wearing suits and ties to the ballgame. End of an era.

Baltimore and Detroit were my favorite teams growing up. Baseball isn’t the same these days.
Epic backdrop for a ballpark. It looks as if this game was played in a residential park. Great imagery, many legends on these teams!
I'm so glad they stopped using that overhead shot from behind the plate so frequently. It's a terrible way to view the game.
Wow, how quickly the pitchers worked!
Of all the years I’ve seen the Orioles, this one is the only time I’ve heard a live organist at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Wild guess? The organ was a demo/promotion, as a one-time-only by a company like Wurlitzer or Baldwin exclusively for the World Series.
