1985 World Series, Game 7: Cardinals @ Royals

St. Louis Cardinals 0 at Kansas City Royals 11, F — The “Show-Me Series” came to an end on October 27, 1985 at Royals Stadium when the night after becoming a father, Royals pitcher Bret Saberhagen threw a five-hitter while leading his team to victory. The Royals became the only team to ever come from a three games to one deficit twice in the same postseason to win the World Series.

  1. Andujar was just looking for a fight. Neither of the pitches he had a conniption over were even in the strike zone.

  2. I was happy to see both George Brett and Frank White finally get a World Series. They had lost to the Phillies in 1980 and came up short a few times in the middle 70's during the ALCS against the Yankees.

  3. Cherbobyl had the biggest meltdown in 1986. But in 85, that honor went to the Cardinals. I get it. Denkinger totally blew that call in Game 6. But if Jack Clark caught the pop up off Steve Balboni and Darrell Porter didn't get crossed up on a passed ball, Cards still could have won and this game here doesn't happen. Also, the Cards had a .185 team batting average and a dreadful .516 OPS. I don't blame Cardinals fans for being upset about the Denkinger call. But the brunt of the wrath should be directed at Herzog. He allowed that call to live in his head and the team followed suit. If winning or losing a 7 game series hinges on one call, you don't deserve to win.

  4. 28:00 In 2nd after walk to Balboni, Motley hits one deep and foul to left, then gets a new bat and homers to deep left on the 8th pitch of the at bat for a 2-0 lead. Royals in the following inning score 3 and chase Tudor.
1:16:35 Bottom of the 5th begins.
1:18:06 First pitching change after leadoff single.
1:29:35 Lahti has gotten 2 outs but last two batters get on and he is relieved after allowing 4 hits and 4 runs. Still 1 out to go. Horton throws only 3 pitches and allows Brett's 4th hit.
1:31:26 Herzog brings in Andujar on double switch.
    1:36:45 Sundberg up to bat.
1:38:52 Andujar becomes agitated and argues with Denkinger. Then Herzog is ejected.
1:42:11 Andujar charges Denkinger and is ejected.
1:48:45 5th inning finally ends, it took 6 batters to get final out, score is 11-0.

  7. This was rout as the Royals flushed the Cardinals by the score of 11-0. Cardinals pitcher, Juaquin Andujar went ballistic to HP Umpire, Don Denkinger on the pitching calls. KC got it going with a two-run homer.

  8. On This Day In 1985: The Kansas City #Royals win their first World Series championship, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
