The Kansas City Royals are moving from their longtime home at Kauffman Stadium to the downtown Crown Center area, partnering with Hallmark Cards on a $3 billion project that includes a mixed-used development with a new ballpark as its centerpiece.

While the finalized master plan has yet to be complete, Royals owner John Sherman said the $1.9 billion stadium would break ground next year in the middle of Crown Center as part of the first phase of an 85-acre project.

  1. When the Chiefs decided upon Kansas for their stadium, it practically guaranteed the Royals would move to downtown KC Mo. There will be mostly good feelings from this, not blowback. 14:17

  2. It actually kind of makes sense because the Halls are an influential family in KC and are in the same circle as the Kauffmans and other families. Idk if it was the Halls idea or the Royals, but Hallmark is hq’d in an aging building and will probably enjoy a new hq somewhere in this new development. Partnering with the Royals and redeveloping Crown Center is probably a really good move for them.

I think that more will be torn down than just the hallmark corporate hq but the church is staying allegedly. The garage(s) will probably be torn down and rebuilt along with other stuff in the surrounding surface lots. I wouldn’t be surprised if the city lets the Royals redeveloped Washington square park instead of the stadium going there.

This will also be good tourism opportunity for Missouri because the Missouri River Runner Amtrak will now connect to stations literally within walking distance to the baseball stadiums, it will be popular with baseball fans and transit enthusiasts for sure.

  3. Expecting 'Royals at the Crown' or 'Royals at Crown Center' slogans. Need to see the full plan including Hallmark new HQ and renovations. Glad they listened about parking since there are multiple parking garages in the area. I expect one of the surface lots to go for a new HQ.

  4. Maybe I'm imagining things (KCitians help me out here) but it seems to me like Hallmark and the Royals go back aways. Marketing agreements, if not outright owner stakes. That's why I've always thought the running theme of "Royals", "Kings" (now Sacramento), "Crown" and all of these monarchist names come from…The words "entire project" have to be inspected closely – "funded mainly by the Royals…"…I can almost guarantee that the city and state will end up paying the lion's share of the ballpark itself. The Royals will most certainly want to focus on the constant revenue items, i.e., retail, lodging, office, parking, etc. Sports venues are generally money sumps – unless you happen into multi-team, high demand venues like Staples, Ball, MSG, United, Bridgestone, T-Mobile, Boston Gardens, etc. Or SoFi or Metlife on the outdoor side…Baseball venues aren't in that category. Nobody shares stadia, everybody wants their own turf – look at the squabble now in Tampa…It'll be nice to see a civilized effort for once, but I still think MLB is doomed, so I'm not all that optimistic about this as a civic investment for KCMO…

  5. Brodie.. they held a press conference this morning and announced it was a done deal! Ground breaking in 2027! It’s all over the local KC media!

  6. LOL Ageing Kaufman stadium. The Red Sox and Cubs proved you don't need to build a new stadium. That place is only 30 years old. What a joke

  7. Looked to me like the left field wall is going to be the 'blue monster', like Boston's green monster. It could work!

  8. Man, I sure want a new retroclassic ballpark, I’m already getting tired of all of this futurist bull. It just doesn’t belong in baseball 😔

  9. Hi Brodie. Great, informative video on the Royals situation. As a native Kansas Citian, I can only say that this situation will be a veritable nightmare for people to get in and out of that area. And WHERE will fans park their cars for the games? The current Kaufman Stadium has so much parking that you can't fill all the spaces for a Royals home game. I personally wish that the Royals would simply stay put where they are, at the Truman Sports Complex, as their current stadium might be aging, but fans are used to going there for games. Like most structures, stadiums can be renovated. I think moving is a flawed plan. Thanks again for the video.

  10. Hallmark will be ok. They'll go back to the small town they grew up in, away from the hustle and bustle of the city; and find love in the rugged handyman that helps their mom out sometimes.

  11. 12 Acres Not Enough To Build On???,,,,,,, And Yet, The Athletics Are Building On 9 Acres….WTF?

  12. As a Kansas City resident who has LONG wanted the Royals Downtown, I am excited about this. I'm pleasantly surprised that the Royals teamed up with Hallmark on this. (By the way, they also confirmed at the press conference that the Royals' crown logo was designed by Hallmark.) Glad to see that most of the cool stuff I associate with Crown Center – the mall, the aquarium, Legoland, the Westin and the Sheraton (the former Hyatt of that skywalk incident back in the 80's) – will remain unscathed and effectively become part of the ballpark village. Also worth noting that the renderings were done by Populous, which is an architecture firm that specializes in stadiums – and is based here in KC.

  13. About time it's not just a city/state bowing to pro sports… should be built by teams and private funding much like 100 years ago.

  14. PUNK CARD SIGNED FOR ANOTHER OPEN AIR TRASH CAN…May there FOREVER be RAINOUTS AND A FLOODDED FIELD!!!

  15. Hallmark Cards designed the original Royals logo with the shield and crown, the crown being Hallmark's symbol as well.

  16. brodie can u dig in and make a video of the white sox/amtrak update they released some images and a plan that have in mind

  17. I appreciate you covering this and the Royals stuff in general. Hallmark and the Royals have been linked for generations and when Sherman took over ownership he said his primary goal was to continue Ewing Kauffman's wish in keeping the Royals in KC. It sounds silly Hallmark + Royals, but Hallmark created the Royals logo and the two owners/families have worked together several times. Assuming the concept art works, I'm a big fan of this. It's still $2billion privately funded and at least $1billion public (taxed/grants etc).

The K is my favorite place on Earth, probably. I grew up there. Played baseball through college and I love how you can just drop the world off at the gates and spend half a day forgetting about everything else and getting lost in the oasis. That said. There probably coudln't have been a better outcome if I dreamed it up. Really excited for this.

  18. Where did he hear they are keeping that parking garage?
I think that building is history along with a Hallmark Corp. Looks small from aerials. The rendering shows a view they the Sheraton(Hyatt )and the building to the left of it so that is where the center of the stadium will be.
I also think Hallmark offered it up because they want to downsize from an old building that is too big for them now.

  19. I live downtown kc and im so excited. I jog to the ww1 memorial all the time and alreadg pay 115$ a month to park downtown so i can have friends and fam just park in my garage and we can just walk to the game!

  20. Happy that it appears the Royals FINALLY have a ballpark solution. It'll very likely happen given that the funding is already secured from both the city and the state. I'm sure the city worked like hell to keep the Royals in town now that the Chiefs will be leaving for Kansas in a few years. Plus no public vote is required which killed the last proposal as you mentioned. Slight correction on that front though: the sales tax extension wouldn't have funded 2 new KC stadiums. Just 1 completely new stadium for the Royals and a major renovation for Arrowhead Stadium.

  21. If I’m understanding right, it sounds like like most if not a lot of the stadium is going to be below ground which is dope as hell.

  22. The Washington Square Park ballpark site would have a better view of the KC skyline than the Hallmark site. The Washington Square site is literally less than 2,000 feet away from the Hallmark site and just Northwest of the Crown City Square. Not liking the Hallmark site and the 70's era motif.

  23. Not a fan of any public money. The public has already voted no once for this type of project and funding in Kansas City, now they are tying to ram it though. They don't want to pay for it they have already voiced their opinion now they jsut are going to do it anyway.

  24. I’ve been a Royals fan for 30 years exactly since I came to town as a seminary student. But I gotta say the partnership with Hallmark reminds me of the small-town loser boyfriend the heroine dumps in the Reverse Hallmark Movie meme 😂😂😂

  25. Haven't lived in KC for years, so not sure what the surrounding area is like. I see parking being a problem. If the city and surrounding cities were smart, they'd try to figure out how to run commuter train on the RR tracks that run by Union Station. Theres 4-5 active tracks for freight trains.

  26. Just hope nobody has an emergency on game days. Children's Mercy is a block east. I can Invision an ambulance trying to get there while all these ding dongs are driving in circles trying to find a place to park.

  27. Brody you're nailing it with this coverage! It's going to be ironic to have a team play directly next to Our Lady of Sorrows, though lol. Kansas City will be a grown-up city with a real downtown-ish ballpark next to public transportation.

  28. I use to work at Hallmark. Some of those adjoining nearby buildings are part of HQ. They'll probably go.

  29. Like a number of places, Kansas City has a long history in professional baseball. It would have been a blow, much heavier than the Chiefs move, if the Royals had left the city.

  30. I won't be going downtown to watch. Too much traffic as it is… and the roads in and out are horrendous.

  31. I don’t really understand the A’s and Royals “demand” of a ballpark district. They are kind of just anchor tenants of a mall they don’t own.

  32. Stuart Hall another stationary company that used to advertise on the back page of comic books, remember them? I was selling Stuart Hall stationary and greeting cards while I was collecting for my paper route… Some of my newspaper customers were waiting for my collection day in order to order stationary… Once you get your foot in the front door, start turning on the charm and sales pitch… Made more income selling stationary than I did delivering newspapers… Walt would have been proud… Walt Disney, another Kansas City boy that made it big with newspapers and comic books… You can see the Stuart Hall building from the Kansas City Union Station…

  33. Exciting. Hopefully the Royals can either score more than 1 run or the bullpen won't blow every lead by then but that might be asking too much.

  34. Hope this gets done. It would be awesome if the Royals get a new ballpark to stay in K.C
