Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar is having some tough luck in the early going this season. He gives up the winning run in an opening day loss to the Miami Marlins. Even though he picked up the save Saturday in a win over the Marlins, he gives up two runs. And then on Sunday, 3/30, with the Pirates and Marlins tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, he gives up a leadoff infield single to the Marlins’ Derek Hill. Hill steals second and advances to third on a wild throw by Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez. Bednar then throws a wild pitch and Hill scampers home with the winning run.
Pirate Nation may be down on Bednar right now. Sunday’s loss wasn’t totally his fault. His defense let him down. Pirates third baseman KeBryan Hayes doesn’t make a good throw to first on Hill’s infield single. Rodriguez makes a bad throw to second on Hill’s stolen base. But Bednar finishes off this disaster for the Bucs with his wild pitch, allowing Hill to score the winning run.
The Pirates just optioned Bednar to Triple-A Indianapolis.
I feel bad for this guy. I hope he can turn things around for himself and the Pirates.
