What if Astro from “Astro Boy” (2003) was in Super Robot Wars? An ability showcase.

“Astro Boy” is a 50 episode speculative fiction anime series based on Osamu Tezuka’s manga, also drawing from later animated versions. The series depicts the developing relationship between humans and robots. While optimistic about human relationship with artificial intelligence, the series is not entirely utopian; while robots are made to work for humans and tend to have benevolent motivations even when seemingly hostile, humans can intentionally manipulate robots to cause harm in order to serve their own greed or personal insecurities.

Set in a world where robots have become commonplace as labour, the series follows Atom, a robot possessing an advanced artificial intelligence that allows him to experience emotions and empathy like a human being as well as to make his own decisions even against human instruction. Astro frequently finds himself involved in many incidents involving robots, including the machinations of his enigmatic creator Dr. Tenma as well as those of anti-AI activists.

The series maintains a retro-futuristic style, but distinguishes itself by having an overarching dramatic story which progressive over the course of the show. It may have also been attempting to style itself on American cartoons, similarly to Osamu Tezuka using Disney as a source of inspiration, and includes a number of episodes written by Americans as well as mixing the localized name of the character into the Japanese title of the series. The series first aired in April of 2003 to coincide with Astro’s date of birth as stated in the original manga.
