Build Divide: Code White is at the front of the current anime season for me. And yet, it feels as if no one around me cares about it. Since last year with Code Black with season 1, it captivated me as more than just the mere card game anime many tried to reduce it to. Somehow, I managed to make this with my cheap and barely functional laptop.

  1. I went pretty fast here actually. For those curious, here's the script:

Standing Strong, Build Divide: Code White is my anime of the season that tragically almost everyone I know doesn’t know exists. The surviving cast returns and stakes run high as they try to beat not only their opponents, but themselves. That’s because if you can’t beat yourself, you can’t beat anybody else.

Last year, Build Divide: Code Black aired, and despite it wasn’t popular in the West, it captivated me with a bizarrely amusing protagonist. It’s about finding your path in life, just as Teruto did. To find your inner most problems and defeat them, and not let anything get in your way in that which you love. This year, the second season, or Code White, is currently airing and it has surpassed the greatness of it’s first season. I had called it before this season even started that this series would be the one for me and it has not disappointed.

This time the story centers around Teruto’s sister, Kikka. She carries the guilt of what she did as the King in the first season. Overwhelmed, she struggles to survive in the digital world that has been reduced to a wasteland were people are being preyed upon by an old threat. After years of running away, she gets saved by returning cast member Hiyori, who is all grown up now, and she forces Kikka to confront her problems. It’s not easy for Kikka, as she unfortunately is still causing problems for people. Despite this, Hiyori reminds her that she has to pick up the cards.

That’s because this is a card game anime. This turned off a lot of people, though Build Divide: Code White is much more than that. Kikka and Hiyori continue to struggle to reach Kikka’s now trapped brother Teruto in the tower, and grow their bonds and resolve as they try to make it to the top.

  2. I heard good things about Code Black last autumn, so it's def on my PTW.

  3. I'm now a bit more interested in the series after having not actually known what it was.
