If you wondering why would they decide to ambush and beat her up is because Lakyus is an adamantite adventure meaning she is strong. If she wearing her full armor, there no way they could weak her up. They need to catch her off guard
Knowing that she's a priestess it's no wonder why they had to do this. Doesn't matter if they caught her off guard, what matters is how many debuffs it took to finally get the mind control to work.
Being a priestess or a cleric in a game comes with the perk of specializing in giving status ailments to enemies, clearing debuffs to your friends as well as buffing stats of party members. If they tried doing this when she was alert and aware of their betrayal it would've never worked bc she would've gotten rid of the debuffs faster than they could give them to her.
Also, I still think it's bullshit that they supposedly needed to 'weaken' her to get EvilEye's spell to take effect given that EvilEye is comfortably over 25 levels above her. She should be able to land her spells without issue.
