IN WHICH our intrepid recreatrix makes a Victorian Housedress inspired dress for historybounding and modern wear, and manages to make it a closet cosplay for Sophie Hatter from Howl’s Moving Castle (the Diana Wynne Jones book more than the Studio Ghibli movie, honestly), all while pattern testing the upcoming pattern release from @Ora_Lin! I’ve been a very busy recreatrix.

  1. Yay!! It turned out well and looks lovely on you!

The color balance of the thumbnail and my phone screen made the dress look like a very pale blue, which is extra-appropriate for your inspiration. 😂 🖤 But yay goth version!

  2. Just beautiful – a lovely pattern, and your fabric and styling choices really show it to advantage.

I'm taking a break from my own grey linen project with front placket (a French-style smock for my mum), and I finished my tea long ago, but it was plain rooibos, as usual.

  3. The way you matched up the front and back shoulder pieces is genius! I'm going to have to try that the next time I make something really long. The color is lovely. Yes, make it goth! And the ruffler foot. 😍 I need one for my machine.

  4. How fun!
Such a pretty sneak peek reveal

I have been ignoring my rehydration (coconut water powder, in water, to rehydrate it, to rehydrate me)🙄

  5. That looks super comfortable. Also, the tank you were wearing while sewing on the buttons looked inspired by a viking apron dress! Did you make it?

  6. I actually tossed a coin today to see if Howl's Moving Castle or The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System series would be my re-read of the weekend. Howl lost but your dress still brought a touch of Sophie to my day.
    Dress turned out looking amazing. :}

  7. Love the dress. Has given me ideas of what I can use some of my stash fabric on. Will keep an eye out for the pattern. Especially as Ora is usually very size inclusive.

  8. Hello fellow pattern tester, yours came out so good! 10/10 fabric choice, the colour and drape are excellent.

  9. I've needed a dress like this in my life for a long time. Will be returning to this video once the pattern comes out

  10. Ooooh new Ora sneak peek! This turned out so pretty, and it looks super comfy too. I'd say ghost of a Victorian child isn't a bad wardrobe goal 😁

I've really been enjoying Ora's recent pattern releases. They make size-inclusive patterns that hit the right amount of 'cute' for me – I'm not big on too many frills, ruffles, or other frou-frou bits in my personal wardrobe. I'm fascinated by the yoke construction, it's genius!

  11. This is so lovely. Great color choice. I can't wait to by this pattern when it is released. Ora Lin makes some very nice patterns.

  12. This is gorgeous! I'd love to have a similar dress. I would probably make mine in a soft green or blue, but this gray is lovely on you. 🙂
Now I need to find time to make a Sophie dress… I think I have enough blue-green pastel linen, but I would definitely need to alter the neckline/collar. It looks like it would be too snug to be comfortable as is.

  13. Fantastic, what a great dress. The color is perfect.
Is it just me, or does it scream apron? Like, say, a Victorian child?

  14. My tea today is a store brand (Sainsbury) Raspberry, Cranberry and Peach fruit tea (real fruit with granules of fruit flavoring with NO sugar – you could not drink this tea without a little bit of sweetener). I chose to sweeten my tea with honey.

  15. It is a beautiful dress and look so good on you.

I am glad I am not the only one who hates to stitch in the ditch. I can never get it just right. There are times when only hand stitching will do.

  16. Man, I want to make that one full-length and cosplay the heck out of Marilla from Anne of Green Gables. I’ve never wanted to cosplay Marilla before! 😀
