As the Russian invasion of Ukraine reminds the world of threat that nuclear weapons pose,the details of this year’s Peace Memorial Ceremony, held in Hiroshima, have been announced.

Protests against statements made by President Vladmir Putin implying the use of nuclear weapons have increased in Hiroshima, primarily organized by hibakusha.
Amidst Russian acts of brutality that run counter to the ideals of nuclear abolition,the 2022 Peace Memorial Ceremony is set to be held on August 6 in the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima.

I think one of the main focal points this year will be what foreign dignitaries have to say about Russia and Ukraine.

If this ceremony in Hiroshima sends a clear message that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a mistake, then I think it will have played a hugely important role.

Currently there are hibakusha who live all over the world. From the bottom of my heart, I hope that Hiroshima and Nagasaki will work together with these global hibakusha to proclaim to the world that using nuclear weapons is absolutely unthinkable.

Speaking to officials, we now have a clearer picture of what the 2022 Peace Memorial Ceremony will look like as the shadow of nuclear weapon use looms.

Usually held with 11,500 seats, this year’s ceremony will see a return of about one-third of these seats. Of these, seating for participants will increase from last year’s 880 to approximately 3,500. The City of Hiroshima has announced that it will not be sending invitations to President Putin or the Russian ambassador to Japan.
Furthermore, they also won’t be extending an invitation to the Belarusian ambassador to Japan due to
the indirect support Belarus has provided to the Russian invasion.

It has been 77 years since the atomic bombing. Here in Hiroshima, preparations to mark this solemn occasion continue.

ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻で核兵器の脅威が再認識される中、被爆地広島で行われる今年の平和式典の概要が明らかになりました。

核兵器の使用を示唆した発言に、広島県内では被爆者を中心に抗議の動きが増しています。核兵器廃絶の思いに逆行するロシアの蛮行が続く中、被爆地広島では８月６日に平和記念式典が開かれます。

「ロシアがウクライナを侵攻したということについて、はっきりと間違いだということを言ってあげれば、
広島からの式典の大きな役割が果たせると思う」

「今、グローバル被爆者といわれる世界中に核の被ばく者の方がいらっしゃいます。その核の被害者のみなさんを、ぜひ広島・長崎が手を取り合って、核兵器を使うのはもってのほかだということを一緒に声を上げていければいいなと、本当に心から願っています」

「核兵器の存在が影を落とすなか行われる今年の平和記念式典。関係者への取材で、その概要が見えてきました。」

例年、１万１５００席が設置されていた平和記念式典は、コロナ禍前の３分の１程度の規模に回復する予定です。このうち、去年８８０席だった参列者の席は、およそ３５５０席に増設されます。また、広島市はプーチン大統領と駐日ロシア大使、さらに、ロシアの侵攻を間接的に支援したベラルーシの駐日大使に対しても、式典への招待状は送らない予定です。

原爆投下から７７年。今年も広島は「原爆の日」を迎えます。
