Story synopsis
In 1965, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, once a prosperous coal mining town, had become a declining industry with the rise of a new fuel, oil.
Due to personnel cutbacks, thousands of workers were being laid off every month. Under these circumstances, the construction of the Joban Hawaiian Center was proposed as a new project to revitalize the town.
The plan was to use the hot springs in Joban to build a resort facility with a Hawaiian atmosphere and a Hawaiian dance show to liven things up. Of course, the workers objected. What the hell is Hawaii?
Sanae (Yuuri Ota), who was born and raised in this town, decides to apply for the dancer positions with her friend Kimiko (Sarina Ushio (Hinatazaka 46)), thinking it would be a chance to escape her daily life of being covered in mud. However, the girls gathered around Kazumi (Haruka Kodama) ask, “Are you going to make us dance naked?”
and most of them disappeared. Kimiko and Sanae are the only ones left, and they are worried about whether they can really form a hula dance team.
The director of the Hawaiian Center brings Madoka Hirayama (Maimi Yajima), a former SKD dancer, to the town. Kimiko and her friends are at first distrustful of Madoka, who wears sunglasses and looks down on country people, but they are drawn in by her exceptional dancing skills and her charm.
As opposition from the coal mine union members intensifies, Kimiko decides to leave home and become a hula girl, despite the opposition of her mother Chiyo (Yami Arimori), who works at the coal mine.

”The reconstruction will be made possible by the girls’ smiles!”
This is the story of the struggles of these hula girls.
