Charles Michel, President of the European Council, visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on May 13 and, in addition to learning more about the realities of the bombing, he also announced a statement strongly condemning the continuing invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

As we speak, global security is under threat. Russia, a nuclear-arms-state, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, is attacking the sovereign nation of Ukraine while making shameful and unacceptable references to the use of nuclear weapons.

President Michel also announced a strongly worded statement condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“The responsibility to remember is now a more moral demand than ever.”

Next, led by Hiroshima City Mayor Kazumi Matsui in the rain, he visited the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims where he made an offering of flowers and stood silently gazing at the Cenotaph for over one minute, as though deep in thought about all people who passed away in the bombing.
In a closed conversation with Mayor Matsui, President Michel discussed various topics, such as ensuring security in a world threatened by nuclear weapons.
Mayor Matsui also announced that despite being unable to enter the country due to diplomatic reasons, he intends to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the August 6 Peace Memorial Ceremony so that he might learn of the realities of the bombing.

(President Michel) said that, in light of seeing the realities of the bombing, he would do everything in his power as a politician to seek an ideal society. I strongly hope that world leaders, especially those in nuclear-weapon-states,
will learn from his example and put policies in motion toward that same end.

At the end of the day, upon meeting with Keiko Ogura, who experienced the bombing at 8 years old, President Michel said that remembering Hiroshima is a great way to maintain peace, and it is especially important when it comes to the abolishing nuclear weapons.

Hiroshima is not just something that happened in the past. Over and over again, the people of the world must
take the time to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In doing so, we can relate the past to the future and think about the work that must be done now.

The City of Hiroshima has worked in the past to invite leading nations, including the EU, to visit the atomic-bombed city, but this time, the trip was a result of President Michel’s strong volition to visit Hiroshima.

ＥＵ＝ヨーロッパ連合のミシェル大統領は、5月13日 広島市の原爆資料館を訪れ「被爆の実相」に触れると共にウクライナへの軍事侵攻を続けるロシアを非難する声明を発表しました。

「今こうしている間にも、世界の安全保障は脅かされています。核兵器国家であり、国家安全保障理事会の常任理事国であるロシアが、主権国家であるウクライナを攻撃しています。そして恥ずべきことに、許し難いことに、
核兵器の使用に言及すらしています。」

ミシェル大統領はロシアによるウクライナ侵攻に触れ、強い言葉でロシアを非難する声明を発表しました。

「記憶する義務は これまで以上に道徳的な要求である」

続いて雨が降りしきる中、広島市の松井市長の先導で原爆慰霊碑に献花した大統領は、原爆による犠牲者に思いを馳せるかのように、１分以上、無言で慰霊碑を見つめていました。

非公開で行われた松井市長との対談では、核兵器の脅威にさらされている世界の安全保障などについて意見を交わしたということです。また松井市長は、今年の８月６日の平和記念式典に、外交上は入国はできないものの
「被爆の実相に触れてほしい」との思いで、プーチン大統領宛の招待状を出すことも明らかにしました。

「被爆の実相を踏まえた上で、あるべき方向を追及する政治家としてやっていくということも言っていただきました。各国の為政者の方 、とりわけ核兵器を持っている国の為政者の方は、こういった対応を心掛けていただく、そういう方向に物事が動いていくということを強く期待します。」

最後に８歳で被爆した小倉桂子さんと面会した大統領は、「ヒロシマを思うことが平和の維持、特に核兵器廃絶には役に立つ」と話したということです。

「広島は過去ではないということ。繰り返し、繰り返し、世界の人が広島・長崎を思い起こさなきゃいけない。それを思う時に、私たちの現在に繋がっていって、私たちは何をしなきゃいけないかっていうのを感じます。」

広島市は、これまでＥＵなどの主要国に被爆地訪問を働きかけてきましたが、今回はミシェル大統領の強い意向で広島訪問が実現しました。
