While the first\u2011generation 0 Series had successfully launched the T\u014dkaid\u014d Shinkansen in 1964, further speed increases demanded new research into aerodynamics, traction performance, braking systems, and lightweight carbody structures.<br \/>\nThe train consisted of two cars (951\u20111 and 951\u20112), designed specifically for experimental work rather than passenger service. Its streamlined nose shape and refined body profile represented early attempts to reduce air resistance\u2014design concepts that would later influence the 100 Series, 300 Series, and subsequent Shinkansen families.<br \/>\nOn February 24, 1972, the Class 951 achieved a top speed of 286 km\/h, setting a world record for rail vehicles at the time. Although the train never entered commercial operation, the data gathered from its test runs played a crucial role in shaping Japan\u2019s high\u2011speed rail development for decades to come.<br \/>\nToday, the preserved leading car 951\u20111 is displayed in Kokubunji City, Tokyo, at the Shinkansen Museum (north side of Hikari Plaza).
