During the difficult years of World War II and the postwar period, it provided powerful traction and played an essential role in freight transport, particularly along the Japan Sea coastal route, serving the locomotive depots of Nagaoka and Sakata.<br \/>\nOver its lifetime, the locomotive ran approximately 2.05 million kilometers\u2014equivalent to circling the Earth about 51 times. It was a familiar sight at Shibukawa Station, where its billowing white steam supported the daily lives and industries of the region.<br \/>\nAfter retiring from service in 1971, the locomotive was preserved at this site.
