Towering behind it are the majestic Northern Alps. It feels like I’ve wandered into a fairytale world. Please enjoy the view with a relaxed heart. 6:00 AM, before the sun has risen. In front of me, the mountains are faintly tinted blue. “Hakuba Village” Above the snow-dusted mountains, a faintly glowing moon appears. The village, still holding onto the night, is crystal clear. All I can hear is the roar of flowing water. Today, I plan to walk around this beautiful village a lot. Gradually, sunlight begins to reach the mountains, turning them red. A black kite cries out boldly to greet the morning. Looking back, I feel the early morning colors even more. The air is cold, but my heart feels warm😌 As time passes, the scenery becomes more and more red. Apparently, the sight of mountains turning red before sunrise is called “Morgenrot.” Such a breathtaking view is sure to captivate anyone. Is this waterway for irrigation? Water flows throughout the village. It clearly shows that this is a rich farming area. The traffic lights are vertical, typical of snowy regions. As the light changes from red to green, I feel like my heart starts to run too. That’s how vast and grand the scenery is. But rushing ahead on impulse often leads to bad outcomes in life. So I’ll hold back my excitement and take time to enjoy the townscape. In front of me is a railroad crossing, like a checkpoint guarding the Northern Alps, dividing east and west. Crossing it feels like something inside me will change. I’ve crossed it…😌 The west side I’ve entered leads to the central area of Hakuba. From here, the real town walk begins. There are several places I want to visit today. But for now, I’ll head toward Hakuba Station. A chilly early morning walk with the moon. I left home while it was still dark and drove to Hakuba on a whim, but I made the painful mistake of forgetting my gloves😇 Walking down a street lined with retro buildings, I’m forcing my numb hands to move with sheer willpower. Feeling the cold morning air on my skin is a pleasure in itself🤔 You can also see the Northern Alps from this street. The towering mountains blend into the townscape. I wonder how the people living here feel when they see this view. I’ve heard that people living by the sea, often find it hard to leave a life where they can see the ocean from their window. Maybe the people here feel the same way, unable to part with a life where they see the Northern Alps from their window. “Hakuba Station” I’ve arrived at my first destination, Hakuba Station. It’s a stylish station building with a Western design. Hakuba is known for its snow activities, so even this small station gets crowded from early morning in winter. This time of year, before the snow piles up, might be the last chance to enjoy a quiet morning. Feeling the eastern sky brighten, I wander away from Hakuba Station for a stroll. The light is now sufficient, and the colors of the scenery are becoming visible. It’s the peak of autumn foliage, and the space is filled with the scent of fall. I’d love to sip some tea while gazing at the vivid red and yellow leaves, but I have too many places I want to visit today, so I’ll pass😭 Instead, I hope today becomes a wonderful day full of amazing experiences. I’m now riding a gondola up the mountain. Below me is a sea of red, so vivid it feels like it’s burning😶 It’s just incredible… “HAKUBA IWATAKE MOUNTAIN RESORT” A magical ladder of light shining down on Hakuba Village…! Clouds have appeared, but dazzling rays of sunlight shine through the gaps. It truly feels like a fairytale world. No one could see this and not be breathless. The hazy mountain range in the distance is also stunning. Buildings nestled in the autumn foliage are beautiful too. Apparently the clouds will clear up with time, so I’ve passed the right to see the majestic mountain view to my future self. With a warm heart, I descend the mountain and head to another spot. Though I could easily descend by gondola, I chose the walking route to fully enjoy the scenery. Surrounded by grandeur, I already feel satisfied enough to go home😌 Beyond a narrow slope lies a vast autumn-colored meadow. It seems to be a mountain bike course. Riding downhill while enjoying the view must be a lot of fun💭 I’d love to try it myself next time. I can see the lift’s endpoint—my destination. Let’s descend together with the lift. The clouds are gradually clearing, and the sun is peeking out. The radiant plants, reflecting or transmitting light, are thriving. It’s as if they’re teaching me what life truly is. A small maple tree swaying in the wind. Being on the mountain, the wind is a bit strong, but watching the plants dance with the wind is part of the joy. Savoring this graceful moment as I walk downhill, I soon arrive at the lift’s lower station. It was a really nice hiking course. “HAKUBA HITOTOKI-NO MORI” This is a place where you can take a break while enjoying a spectacular view. Until the clouds clear from the mountains, I’ll relax at the café. Once again, I feel an incredible sense of openness😶 From the terrace seat, this breathtaking view unfolds. It really shows how rich in nature Hakuba Village is. Looking to the side, I see a peak peeking through the clouds. And then, it suddenly reveals its full form! The white mountain range behind the autumn leaves is incredibly dynamic. My hojicha latte has also arrived. The clouds cleared just before my relaxing time began. Since it’s such a nice moment, I’ll drink it on a bench in the plaza. Sipping hojicha latte while gazing at the clear scenery, the bitterness of the roasted tea and the thick sweetness of the whipped cream blend together, creating a calming, mature flavor. I love hojicha lattes and often order them at cafés, but enjoying one under the cold sky is truly special. Even if it’s a self-indulgent act, I just can’t stop😌 I’ve taken the gondola back up to the mountaintop. Wow, the view is just too amazing… The larches stand out in vibrant orange, followed by red foliage and white snow—a perfect gradient. The long diagonal shadows are also beautiful. In front of this stunning view is a giant swing. Feeling the wind here must be amazing💭 Above me, a crisp contrail stretches across the sky. Autumn leaves usually evoke nostalgia, but maybe because I’m seeing them alongside snowy mountains, today they feel refreshing. It’s rare to see snow and autumn leaves together—the scenery is overwhelming😊 “HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR” I’ve moved to a spot where I can see all the way to the mountain’s base. From bottom to top: orange, red, white, and blue—the colors are stunning… They say this mountain has three layers of color, called “three-tiered autumn foliage.” The beauty is so surreal, I’m left speechless. This must be what people mean by “jaw-dropping.” Of course, I mean that in the best way. What is that winding line from the mountaintop? Could it be a river?🤔 I heard there’s a trekking course through the lush forest over here. Passing by a dog run covered in fallen leaves, I head forward. I walk along a path wrapped in the air of late autumn. “Nezuko-no-mori” This is another place beautifully decorated with fluttering autumn leaves. Trees full of colorful leaves are of course wonderful, but the fleeting moment before they all fall is also sublime. Plus, today’s crisp autumn weather is perfect💮 Autumn skies really do feel higher😌 Maybe because of the nice weather lately, my appetite won’t stop. I’m definitely eating 1.3 times more than in summer😇 They say “autumn is the season when horses grow fat,” but in modern Japan, where food is abundant, it’s definitely “autumn is the season when people grow fat.” Or maybe, only some people get super hungry in autumn🤔 I’m starting to get confused… Next, I’ll show a series of beautiful leaves. Leaves glowing transparently under the sunlight. After absorbing lots of light, they seem to evolve into gemstones. Different colors and shapes depending on the species, but they all share a warm tone and captivating charm. I don’t know why autumn leaves feel so beautiful, maybe it’s the limited time they change color, the gentle hues, or the Japanese sensibility of finding beauty in falling leaves. I may never know the truth, but their beauty is undeniable. So I’ll just follow my feelings and enjoy this beautiful season. I’ve taken the gondola down the mountain. “Hakuba Ohashi Bridge” From here, I can see the mountains from a different angle. Below the bridge flows a jade-green river. It’s like Hakuba’s refined nature is condensed here, a view that’s both grand and delicate. I can clearly see the colorful mountains from here too. Especially Mt. Happo, dyed red—it must be amazing to climb it. Looking down from the bridge, the water is so clear I can see the riverbed. This water seems to come from the beautiful mountains ahead. Right now, the river forms gentle streams across the wide riverbed, but during snowmelt season, it must become even more powerful. If that’s true, I’ll have to come back in another season😌 Of course, the view in the opposite direction of the Alps is stunning too. The rushing water makes a loud sound as it flows quickly, and that sound is so soothing, I lose track of time. There’s a walking path along the river. Beside it are small hills in various colors. Yellow trees floating in the blue sky are beautiful too. Since I’m here, I’ve decided to go down to the riverbed. A slightly stepped river with V-shaped mountains behind it. I didn’t expect such colorful scenery from a simple autumn walk. The water flows from high to low. It foams white for a moment as energy is released, but quickly returns to a clear, unified stream. This place’s theme is undoubtedly “spiritual cleansing.” Whether shot from afar, or close to the water, this scenery looks beautiful no matter how it’s photographed—no special skills needed. I continue walking along the riverside path. Silver grass and snowy mountains make a perfect match. I used to think only Mt. Fuji offered autumn and snow views together. I’ve seen Mt. Fuji covered in first snow from the autumn-colored lakeside, but this place has a different kind of charm. Mt. Fuji stands out with its elegant shape, but here, it’s the collective beauty of a mountain range. Plus, the wide-open space untouched by overdevelopment, makes Hakuba Village one of Japan’s top scenic spots. Orange autumn leaves and the blue of sky and snow are opposites on the color wheel, making the color harmony perfect—that’s another bonus😌 Admiring a view that never gets old no matter how many times I see it. Let’s go explore somewhere else next. “Happo Area” I’ve visited all the places I planned to today, so now I’ll just wander around the village. Planning ahead is important, but aimless strolling is part of the joy of town walking. Even though I’ve walked a lot, I still feel full of energy today. Maybe it’s because I’ve been eating well lately, or because the weather is nice, or maybe the scenery has pumped up my adrenaline. Anyway, I’ll keep walking until I’m totally spent💪 The spacing between buildings in the village is quite generous. No wonder it’s one of Nagano’s top villa areas. The vibe here is similar to Karuizawa, another villa town in Nagano, with a touch of Western-style elegance. A tall ginkgo tree standing proudly is also captivating. Its entire canopy dyed golden is breathtaking, unlike the delicate tones of maples and other broadleaf trees, it boldly declares “Look at me!” and grabs attention. Whether human or plant, you need to show your charm to be noticed. To shine, you must be able to express your strengths clearly. This year, I want to find a beautiful ginkgo-lined avenue. Hakuba Village is divided into several areas, each with its own character. Right now, I’m in the Happo area. The red mountain I saw from Hakuba Bridge is Mt. Happo. This area is the gateway to climbing Mt. Happo and other Northern Alps peaks. It also gets lively in winter thanks to snow sports. You can take a gondola halfway up Mt. Happo, but it’s currently closed. And since snow sports haven’t started yet, the village feels a bit quiet. Even though there aren’t many people around, in this colorful season, it might be the best time to enjoy a peaceful town walk. I’ve arrived at a wide-open space. Thin cirrus clouds are drifting across the sky. To my right is a quiet rural landscape. Coming to Hakuba from the west means crossing the mountains behind me. There’s a mountain pass along the way where you can see the Northern Alps. The first time I saw that view, it felt almost sacred. It’s a narrow, winding road—not easy to drive, but the scenery makes it worth the effort. I live in the south, so I rarely get to take that route, but next time I go to Niigata or northern Nagano, I’ll definitely drive it again. Everywhere I look is like a painting… I think I’ve pressed the shutter twice as much as usual today… I spotted a building that looks straight out of a fairy tale😶 White walls, a red triangular roof, and a chimney. Its elegant design, backed by white mountains, is truly refined. It feels like it stepped out of reality and into a fantasy world. I looked it up and found out it’s a hotel. Inside, it has a very stylish Scandinavian design. And it even has a natural hot spring you can enjoy for the day. Next time, I definitely want to stay at this hotel😊 In the backlight, I see silver grass and Mt. Karasawa. The sun is slowly setting—this day is coming to an end. The streets I walk in the evening light feel a bit melancholic. Some of the stylish shops on both sides have already closed. There are still cafés open, but with the sun about to set, I’d rather keep walking and enjoy the moment. So I decided to skip the break😌 I realized I’ve only had a hojicha latte and some water today—my stomach is growling. After this walk, I want to have a big meal before heading home. Above me, the colorful maple leaves are still swaying. As I walk, the light sparkles through them. It’s about time to think about heading back. So I decided to return to the parking lot. Of course, I’ll take a different route than the one I came on. The sun no longer shines directly—it’s time to relax. Through the thin clouds, the sun is sinking behind the mountains. It’s a scene that’s neither morning nor day—just a little lonely. As the sun sets, my energy is also running low. My steps are gradually slowing down. Without realizing it, I’ve been walking since sunrise until sunset. The parking lot is near—it’s time to end this journey. “Tenzinzaka” Today, I walked through Hakuba Village dyed in autumn colors. Clear streams, stylish buildings, and the harmony of snow-covered Northern Alps and red leaves— it was a day full of delightful surprises.
