Thanks.)<\/p>\n<p>Abashiri Prison Museum is by far one of the most interesting sights in Hokkaido. It was constructed in the 1890s to hold over 1,000 dangerous criminals; think of it as Japan&#8217;s Alcatraz.<\/p>\n<p>Very few prisoners ever escaped or even tried to escape because of Hokkaido&#8217;s isolation and brutal winters.
