Right now, I’m in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Today I’m taking the Tsugaru Strait Ferry to cross from Hokkaido over to Aomori. I’ve passed through the Seikan Tunnel by Shinkansen before, but this is my first time traveling by ferry, so I’ll be giving you a full report. This is the Tsugaru Strait Ferry Hakodate Terminal. It’s about 10 minutes by car from Hakodate Station, so it’s super easy to access. I’ve always wanted to ride the Tsugaru Strait Ferry, and recently the brand-new Blue Grace started service, so this route’s been getting a lot of buzz. There it is—Blue Mermaid! It’s hugeee. And the name is so cute. Apparently, the name “Blue Mermaid” was inspired by a sea fairy tale. On the side of the ship, it says “Tsugaru Strait Ferry” with a big dolphin illustration. This ferry is famous for dolphin sightings, so I wonder if I’ll see any today… Spring is the easiest season to spot them, but maybe I’ll get lucky today… *Pretty sure my good karma will help (self-proclaimed)* And across the way—what’s that? There’s a super quirky ferry over there. Tempting, but today I’ll stay loyal and ride the Tsugaru Strait Ferry. Oh, look! There’s a heart-shaped bell. Since I’ve got some time before departure, maybe I’ll ring it. Hakodate Terminal Wood Deck “Heart Monument” Okay, time to make a wish. *Sounds more like the start bell of a boxing match* Please let me see dolphins today! *Praying on fast-forward* Alright, let’s head inside the ferry terminal. It’s still early morning, so all the shops are closed. I’m starving… And of course, I didn’t eat breakfast. *The shop hours are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., by the way* Oh wow… everything looks delicious. Look, they’ve got salmon rice bowls and ramen too. So good… Right now it’s 6:36, and they don’t open until 10, so no luck for me… not even close. *The only way to eat is to ditch the ferry ride* I scanned the QR code I got by email and checked in at the machine with no problem. Now I just have to wait for boarding time. You can still grab a ticket at the counter up until about 90 minutes before departure. Right next to it, they were selling Tsugaru Strait Ferry exclusive merch. And of course, dolphins are the star here too! Alright, it’s finally time to board! Let’s get on this ferry. Um… why does it feel like I’m the only one boarding? Is this… okay? Are there even people today? *Flashback to that Suruga Bay Ferry with literally zero passengers* But when I booked, most of the rooms were already taken. So maybe everyone’s boarding with their cars? Ah, makes sense. By the way, this is my very first time in a suite! I’m sooo excited! I wonder what the room looks like. This boarding bridge is kinda long. Ugh, it’s freezing… *Feels like October weather already—what the heck!* Made it onboard safely! Wow, the inside looks super clean. Let’s head straight to the room. I’ll show this area later. *I’m such a suite newbie, I have no clue about anything* Where is it…? Oh, there’s the suite—upstairs maybe? Let’s go up! My room is 404. Room 404. Okay, time to step into my very first suite! So excited! Whoa… this is insane… *By far the most gorgeous interior I’ve ever seen* It’s ridiculously pretty. This is basically a hotel—like, wow. What’s the view like from the window? Let’s check it out. Here it is. There’s that cheerful ferry from earlier! *It’s staring like it really wants me to board it* Alright, let’s do a little room tour. Right by the entrance on the right, there’s a sink area. And the sink is suuuper clean. It just feels so fresh and spotless. And of course, there’s a mirror too. Yay! And on the other side… what’s this? *There’s even a little full-length mirror space like at an entryway* Inside this closet… As usual, just two hangers. And some pajamas too. Not sure if I’ll wear them tonight… But hey, I kinda want to anyway. And what’s in this closet? Oh, it’s the same—two closets in one room! Wow, this suite really goes all out… And here’s the main part of the room—two beds. I think they’re single-size? Yep, two single beds. The way they arranged the cushions looks super fancy… I’ve never arranged mine like that! Across from the beds, there’s a TV and some stylish lighting. And near the window, there are two chairs that look suuuper comfy. These are nice! I could totally chill here for like ten hours straight. And in the corner of the room, there’s a fridge. Since it’s a suite, maybe… Is it stocked with drinks? Ah, totally empty… Yeah, I figured. *Just to be sure, I touched everything to check—nothing inside* There’s also another little space like this. And another closet here too. Inside, there’s a tea set. Looks like you can make green tea and coffee. Next to the sink area, there’s the bathroom. Well, I probably won’t use it though. But it’s super clean. Past the toilet, there’s a curtain. And behind it, a shower and bathtub. A bathtub in a ferry cabin— that’s a first for me! So cool… And the showerhead too— it looks like a fancy one, right? Should I take a shower later… or maybe not… *But honestly, I kinda wanna use everything since I’m here* So yeah, that’s the room! Right now it’s 7:26, and the ferry leaves at 7:40, so I’ll take a little break before going out to watch the departure. I’ve made it up to the observation deck. I’m gonna watch the ferry set sail from here. This is the view of Hakodate from the ferry. I’ve been staying in Hakodate for about three days this time, and honestly, I had a really good time. I didn’t film it, but I went out for sushi and stuff. And see that tower over there? I also went to Goryokaku Park. It was sooo much fun. Looks like they’re getting the ship ready to leave. Whoa, that made a big splash—what was that? The ferry has started moving! Bye-bye Hakodate, I’ll be back! And that mountain you see over there is Mt. Hakodate. *From Mt. Hakodate you can see the famous “Million-Dollar Night View”* Tsugaru Strait—Winter Scene ♪ I didn’t plan on wearing white today, but I guess it turned into a snow outfit. Time to enjoy the Tsugaru Strait in midsummer. Thank you very much for sailing with Tsugaru Strait Ferry today. Here’s an announcement for our passengers. This ship has now officially departed. We’re on our way! Okay, now that I’ve seen the ferry leave safely, let’s go explore inside the ship. So this is the boarding area, and right to the left when you walk in, there’s a shop. The shop looks like this, and it has a slightly different vibe from other ferries. I’ll take a closer look later. And on the opposite side, there’s a sink area. I wonder if you can make cup ramen here? You can pour hot water here, and then eat it back at your spot. Well, maybe don’t spill cup ramen though! And this ferry doesn’t have a restaurant. So you just buy food from these vending machines. They even sell alcohol. But today’s trip is only 3 hours and 40 minutes, so I’ll pass on drinking this time… I’ll behave… (for real!) Here’s what the entrance area looks like, and there are plenty of spots to sit and relax. And if you go up these stairs, that’s where my room is. At the top of the stairs, it looks like this— and there’s Wi-Fi! Yay! But since we’re traveling close to land the whole way, I don’t think the signal will cut out anyway. Here’s what the map of the 5th floor looks like. It’s mostly guest rooms. I’m staying in room 404 over here, and if you go this way, there are Comfort Single rooms. Hmm, what’s this? A piano? Oh wait, it’s an arcade game. And here’s the long-awaited kids’ room— this is what it looks like. Only one toy here. There’s an Anpanman ride-on and just one claw machine too. But nah, I’ll skip it today. I’ll pass. And there are also shower rooms. *No public bath, but you can use the showers anytime* No one’s here right now, but inside it looks like this— each person gets their own private shower room. With these types of showers, don’t you always accidentally blast yourself with cold water from above? Maybe that’s just me… Anyway, there are four shower rooms like this. And on the other side, there are hair dryers too, which is handy. Ahh, but the wind’s so weak… And with only three hours on board, drying my hair might take forever. And if you head this way, there’s something called the View Seats. On the Tsugaru Strait Ferry, these are the highlight seats. Let’s go sneak a peek. You can sit here and relax, and enjoy the view too—so nice. But when I tried to see the View Seats, turns out you can’t get in without a ticket. Womp womp… *Here’s what the View Seats look like* So basically, the View Seats are special reserved seats at the front of the ferry with big windows where you can see the whole ocean. The seats recline almost 180 degrees, plus they’ve got outlets, so you can do some laptop work or reading too. But hanging around here too long feels kinda awkward… Retreat!! From here on, it’s the Standard Rooms. It’s not off-limits to peek in here, right? Should be okay… Yup, nothing written here—let’s go! Looks like this, and nobody’s inside. It’s basically all to myself. And there’s a TV too, so it seems like a chill place to hang out. Since the ride is only 3 hours and 40 minutes this time, even a simple shared sleeping room like this would honestly be totally fine. Last time I went to Okinawa, I actually stayed in one of those shared sleeping rooms, and it was totally fine. So I think this would work just fine too. Here’s what the shop looks like inside. They’ve got Hokkaido snacks like Shiroi Koibito and Jaga Pokkuru. They’re also selling Blue Mermaid merch. Isn’t this design super cute? I collect ship stamps, so I’m really happy to see such a cute design. They also had lots more Blue Mermaid goods for sale. Oh, a dolphin! If I see a dolphin today, I’ll buy this. *Purchase with conditions attached* I also grabbed some food from the vending machine. Crab rice, a sea urchin butter rice ball, and burdock tempura. I’m starving, so I’m about to go wild. Okay, let’s dig in! *?!* Wait… no, this isn’t what it looks like… Since the ticket was cheaper this time, I’m treating myself with a beer as payback. This crab rice looks amazing. Seafood in Hokkaido is always good, so this crab rice has to be delicious too. Yum! It’s tasty, but honestly, not super crabby at first. Oh wait, never mind— the crab flavor kicks in later. It’s refreshing and delicious. *The key is how much you can feel the crab* And now, the burdock tempura I was curious about. I wonder if this burdock tempura is a collab with some shop? What character is this, anyway? Delicious. Even without a restaurant, it’s nice that you can still get meals from the vending machines like this. Wait—was that a dolphin? *Pretty sure I just saw a dorsal fin for a split second (I think)* But it was so quick, I couldn’t tell if it was really a dolphin. Oh right, I also stopped by the shop earlier, and what I bought was… the ship stamp I’ve been collecting. Since this trip is Hakodate → Aomori, I made sure to get the Hakodate Blue Mermaid ship stamp. The design is sooo cute. Honestly, might be the cutest one yet. I also grabbed a Shiroi Koibito along with the stamp. I’ll save that to eat once I get home. I seriously love Shiroi Koibito. So happy I got it! *Also powering up with the uni rice ball* Inside it’s packed with sea urchin like this, and it’s sooo good. But this rice ball was about $3.30. Kinda pricey, right? Well, I guess uni is expensive, so fair enough. I woke up super early today, and this is my first meal, so it tastes amazing. My ferry left at 7:40 a.m., and I wanted to get here by around 6, so I woke up at 4 a.m. today. But the Blue Mermaid ferry I took was already the 8th sailing—they even had seven before that! Isn’t that insanely early? There are three ferries on this route: Blue Mermaid, Blue Happiness, and Blue Dolphin. And they run from super early morning to late at night. The first one’s at 3:20 a.m., and the last one’s at 2:05 a.m.! Basically running nonstop. That’s like 23 hours straight. *Working way too hard—respect* *Went back to my room to rest a bit, and…* *I totally passed out way more neatly than I expected* I got up so early today, so I took a quick nap. As you can see, it’s ridiculously fancy— literally like a hotel room. And all this for under $65—crazy, right? The window’s like a framed painting, and the view keeps changing in real time. It feels super luxurious. To be precise, this room cost $64 for one person. Just barely under $65, and being able to stay in a suite at this price— you probably won’t find that anywhere else. Other ferries usually cost hundreds of dollars, so I always give up on suites. But the moment I saw this one, I knew it was finally time to try a suite for the first time. By the way, the cheapest room is the Standard Hall, and it’s only about $21. Next is the View Seat, which costs around $25. After that, the Comfort S is about $29. Then there’s the suite for two people, and that’s about $42. But that room is meant for two people. So if you stay alone, they add a solo-use fee, which is about $23 extra. Still, even under $65, being able to stay in a suite like this is honestly amazing. For reference, the Gran Class I took before cost about $100. So compared to that, the ferry is cheaper and you get this kind of luxury. *If you’ve got the time, ferries might be the better option* I’ve conquered the undersea tunnel by Shinkansen, and now the sea by ferry. Next I wanna conquer the skies— maybe with paragliding or something. I turned on the TV, and it shows the map. Right now we’ve just entered Aomori Prefecture, and we’re on the west side of the Shimokita Peninsula. Looks like we’ll arrive at Aomori Port in about an hour. We’re actually ahead of schedule— we were supposed to arrive at 11:20, but now it’s 11:08. Since I napped a bit, I’ve only got an hour left… Better enjoy this last hour! I’ve come out to look for dolphins. According to what I read, the best chance to see them is about an hour before arriving at Aomori Port. Which is right about now. Wait—hold on, my hair’s in the way, I can’t see anything! Forget dolphins, I can’t even see the ocean… I’m gonna keep my eyes peeled and search for dolphins for a while. *If you’re lucky, you can see pods of dozens of Dall’s porpoises
jumping in the ferry’s wake* I’ve been staring at the sea for a while, but there’s no sign of dolphins. They’re just not showing up… After watching for a while, still no dolphins. Guess this is payback for my daily karma… Maybe I should at least go pick up some trash on the ship. Oh wow, someone left their tray here. Let me return this for them. If I do something good like this, maybe the dolphins will finally show up. *Probably need to return like 100 more trays before that happens though* Alright, tray returned! Okay dolphins, I’m waiting for you. Wow, they’ve decorated with mermaid statues to match the Blue Mermaid theme. So cute! There’s even another mermaid over here. *Look closely, isn’t she lovely?* And there are seashells decorated everywhere. These shiny golden shells look so pretty. Oh wow, here’s a captain’s hat. Should I try it on? Uh, hello there. I’m Captain Suzuki. Anyone watching this video ever seen a dolphin before? Okay, this is getting embarrassing… Retreat!! I just connected to the ship’s Wi-Fi, and look, I can stream videos just fine. Pretty fast actually. And the ship barely rocks at all. I did take motion sickness medicine just in case, but honestly I didn’t even need it. Smooth sailing, Yuuka-style! I’ve been staring out the window forever, but still no dolphins. Total 404… Not Found. If you’ve ever spotted dolphins from a ferry, which route were you on? Please tell me the best ferry for dolphin watching! I really wanna see dolphins too. From this angle though, doesn’t it totally look like I’m in a hotel? …Or like a hospital patient. There’s only about 20 minutes left before we dock, but I swear I’m gonna spot a dolphin! Uh oh… I’m getting sleepy… Okay, nap time. Oh, hey look! There’s another Tsugaru Strait Ferry. We’re passing each other! I wonder which one that is—Blue Dolphin maybe? Bye-bye! Right before getting off, I noticed something— there’s actually a game corner here! I thought there was only one claw machine, but turns out there are lots. Look at this—wait, it’s Squid Game’s gonggi! Should I try to win it? Please, please… Ah… didn’t get it… *Guess I can’t disembark like this—time for a rematch* Oof… that one hurt. I found this place too late, and now I’m short on time, so I’ll stop here for today. Ugh, so frustrating. *And just like that, Aomori is in sight* *It’d be perfect if I could spot a dolphin at the very end…* Thank you for sailing today on the Tsugaru Strait Ferry Blue Mermaid. We sincerely appreciate it. The ferry has now arrived at Aomori Port. That 3 hours and 40 minutes went by so fast. Alright, time to get ready to disembark. We’ve arrived at Aomori Port. My very first time setting foot in Aomori. On this Tsugaru Strait Ferry, I didn’t manage to see any dolphins today, but I’ll definitely try again next time. But wow, my first suite room— it was absolutely amazing. I even surprised myself by how peacefully I dozed off. Now that I’ve experienced a suite’s comfort, I wanna stay in them all the time— ahh… who am I kidding (reality check). Hopefully I’ll get to use one again someday. Even though today’s ride was only 3 hours and 40 minutes, I honestly wanted to stay longer. But then again, the fare would probably go up too. The ferry did have Wi-Fi, but the connection stayed on the whole time, so I didn’t even really need the Wi-Fi.
