Jingu Shrine is a shrine located in Jingu-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Formerly ranked as a Kanpei Taisha (Great Shrine of Imperial Support). It is currently a beppyo shrine (specially designated as a shrine by the Association of Shinto Shrines) and an imperial shrine. The site is believed to be the location of Omi-Otsunomiya, where Emperor Tenji moved the capital from Asuka to Omi-Otsunomiya in 667 (the 6th year of his reign). In 1908 (Meiji 41), marking the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Otsu City, a movement arose to enshrine Emperor Tenji at the site of the Otsunomiya shrine, a place associated with him. In 1938 (Showa 13), by imperial decree of Emperor Showa, the founding of Kanpei Taisha (Great Shrine of Imperial Support), Omi Jingu, was decided upon.
