Its name comes from the resemblance of the tuff sea cliffs and wave-cut terraces, believed to have formed approximately 16 million years ago, to a tatami-covered floor. In addition to its unique stone-paved landscape, the area is also known for its shell and whale fossils, as well as traces of magma, found within its strata.
