This summer vacation brings you a video from Japan. Today, we’re traveling from Akita to Aomori, heading to the foot of Mount Iwaki to buy “Dakekimi” corn. Mount Iwaki is visible in the distance. We left Akita City at 4:30 AM. It took about 180 kilometers from Akita City and three and a half hours to arrive. This is the Dakekimi sales center on the Hirosaki-Dake Ajigasawa Line at the foot of Mount Iwaki in Aomori Prefecture. Since the corn is harvested that morning, we need to get there early or it will sell out. This is fresh corn, just harvested from the fields this morning. There are also peaches. Apparently, the harvest wasn’t very good this year due to a water shortage. Corn is piled high. They’ve been harvesting and preparing since 3 AM. So early! We also got some Dakekimi. There seem to be many varieties, but they all look fresh and delicious. Boil these corns！ What is “Dakekimi”? This is a very sweet brand of corn from Aomori Prefecture. In parts of the Tohoku region, corn is called “kimi” in the local dialect. Mount Iwaki, a beautiful mountain also known as Tsugaru Fuji, is located in the western part of Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Only corn grown and harvested on the Dake Plateau, located at its base at an altitude of 400-500 meters, is called “Dakekimi. ” What makes “Dakekimi” so special? Freshly harvested “Dakekimi” has a sugar content of over 18 degrees Brix, making it as sweet as or even sweeter than fruits like melons. The secret to its sweetness is a 10-degree temperature difference and high-quality soil. It’s so soft, juicy, and sweet! We’ve arrived at the corn field. It’s surrounded by barbed wire to keep animals out. Moving from the mountains to the sea, the green forest is so pleasant! We’ve arrived at Ajigasawa. The sky and sea are a deep blue. The weather is beautiful. I can smell the ocean. We’re at the “Seaside Station Wando.” The charcoal-grilled salted sweetfish look delicious! They’re grilling their specialty, grilled squid. It smells so good! Let’s go up to the second floor. The “Ajigasawa Sumo Hall” is free to visit. Sumo-related items are on display in honor of “Mainoumi,” a former sumo wrestler from Ajigasawa. Past champion wrestlers. Let’s go inside the exhibition room. The envelopes containing the prize money given when a wrestler wins a match. A sumo wrestler ‘s mawashi. Mainoumi’s numerous awards, his decorative mawashi, and sandals. A video of one of Mainoumi’s past matches. He won with an outside throw! I’m joining the wrestler club. Who is “Wasao”? A former stray dog, rescued by Kikuya san the owner of a grilled squid restaurant, became a hot topic online and played a key role in revitalizing the town. “Wasao” is an Akita dog (real name Leo). Both Kikuya san and Wasao have passed away, but they remain important figures in the town. We take a commemorative photo with Wasao in a light truck. We buy grilled squid at Meme-chan’s Shop in Ajigasawa. A pack costs 1,200 yen. Prices have skyrocketed due to a poor squid catch, but the taste remains the same. The semi-dried flying squid is slowly grilled over charcoal. Let’s try it. With mayonnaise. The flesh is thick, plump, and delicious! Continuing on, we arrive at Senjojiki Coast in Fukaura Town, Aomori Prefecture. Senjojiki Coast is made of tuffaceous mudstone, and was uplifted by the 1792 earthquake, creating the unique sight known as Senjojiki. Let’s go inside the Fukaura Roadside Station. They’re also grilling squid here. It smells delicious. Inside the center, there’s a raw fish sales area. Fresh red sea bream, horse mackerel, turban shells, and more. A rack of tuna for sashimi. Let’s go outside. The kids are looking for something. Is there anything there?

English and Italian subtitles are available.
皆様、夏休みいかがお過ごしでしょうか。
Naomi in Chianti

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNYz9TmV4dSTAjSnkDUIb0g

Ciao!
