It was renamed Higashi-Takikawa Station in 1954. When the nearby Akabira coal mine was thriving, the station had many users, with an average of more than 200 people per day in some years, but due to the closure of the mine and changes in express train routes, the number of users has continued to decrease, and in the last 10 years it has been an average of less than 10 people per day. The area around the station is a residential area, but most residents use their own cars rather than trains as their means of transportation.
