It is located to the right (east) of the main hall of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Wakamiya Shrine enshrines Amenooshikumone-no-mikoto as its main deity, who is a deity associated with water and purification. There are 15 subordinate shrines in the surrounding area, each dedicated to a different deity who protects people from the hardships they may encounter during their lifetime.

Every December, Kasuga Taisha Shrine holds the four-day Kasuga Wakamiya On-matsuri (festival of the gods) from December 15th to 18th, an important ceremony to worship the deity of Wakamiya Shrine. The On-matsuri began as a way to prevent famine and epidemics, and has been held every year since 1136 without interruption.

On the third night of the Kasuga Wakamiya Festival, the priests carry the deity from Wakamiya Shrine to a temporary shrine called the Otabijo, which is made of pine and located near the first torii gate of Kasuga Taisha Shrine.

Throughout the day, priests and performers from the Nara region offer up traditional entertainment and music in front of a temporary palace, a rare sight rarely seen outside of the Kasuga Wakamiya Festival.

Just before midnight on December 17th, the sacred object will be returned from the Otabisho to Wakamiya Shrine, where it will continue to protect Nara and its residents.

#若宮神社 #神社 #shrine #japan #nature #travel #history #india #usa

若宮神社(桧倉) Wakamiya Shrine 若宮神社 Jonna Jinton.
