This 15,000t ship was most famous for its role as the flagship under Admiral Togo in the Japanese-Russo War in 1905.  In the battle of Tsushima, she fired 124 twelve-inch shells, more than any other ship except Asahi&#8217;s 142. During the battle, she was hit more than 40 times during the battle, including 10 twelve-inch and 22 six-inch shells, but none caused serious damage. <\/p>\n<p>Ironically, she was sunk at her moorings after a fire and magazine explosion at Sasebo, just 6 days after the Treaty of Portsmouth was signed. She was later refloated and repaired with more powerful six-inch and 45-calibre twelve-inch guns. Following the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, however, she was decommissioned, and is preserved as a memorial ship in 1926.  Confiscated by the US armed forces in 1945, she was returned to Yokosuka in 1948 but in poor condition. Due to funding issues, restoration works didn&#8217;t commence until 1959.
