In order to form an alliance for mutual defence against the common enemy, the representatives of the three founding cantons met at R\u00fctli in 1291. They took an loyalty oath (R\u00fctlischwur) and formed the nucleus of the Swiss Confederation. This act is now seen as &#8220;the Birth of Switzerland&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Today, R\u00fctli is protected historical site.
