Most international travellers focus on the main cities only and skip Takayama, which I believe should be on everyone&#8217;s itinerary. Let&#8217;s explore, join me!<\/p>\n<p>Takayama is located in northern Gifu Prefecture, in the heart of the Japanese Alps. During the Edo period, the area was tenry\u014d under the direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate. In the post-Meiji Restoration cadastral reforms, \u014cno District in Gifu prefecture was created, and the town of Takayama was established in 1889 with the creation of the modern municipalities system.
