Awashima is a small inhabited island with a population of about 200, floating in the Seto Inland Sea off Takuma, Mitoyo City, Kagawa.
The island is formed by three mountains: Jōnoyama, Ashimayama, and Shikiyasan.
This is Mount Jōnoyama, rising 220 meters above sea level, offering a sweeping 360-degree panoramic view.
From here, you can see islands of the Seto Inland Sea such as Shishijima, Takamijima, and Sanagijima.
Even Manabeshima and Mushima in Okayama Prefecture come into view.
Beyond them lie the Shōnai Peninsula, Mount Shiudeyama, the Shikoku Mountains, and Sanuki Fuji.
From above, the contrast between the island and the surrounding sea becomes strikingly clear.

The island’s three mountains are connected by sandbars, forming a shape that resembles a giant propeller.
Settlements extend even across the sandbars, reflecting a way of life that has continued quietly for generations.
The softly shimmering sea and winter-toned hillsides blend together, creating a landscape unique to Awashima.

Awashima is also one of the venues of the Setouchi Triennale, held once every three years.
Artworks such as Missing Post Office are scattered across the island, resonating with its scenery and history.
The island is also home to Japan’s first maritime training school, founded in 1897.Today, the former school remains as the Awashima Maritime Memorial Museum, currently undergoing restoration.

Gentle waves of the Seto Inland Sea quietly mark the passage of time around the island.

    粟島（あわしま）は香川県三豊市詫間町沖合、瀬戸内海に浮かぶ、人口約200人の有人島です。
    島には「城山（じょうのやま）」「阿島山（あしまやま）」「紫谷山（しきやさん）」という三つの山があります。
    ここは標高220mの城山（じょうのやま）です。山頂からは360度のパノラマビューが広がります。
    城山からは志々島（ししじま）、高見島（たかみじま）、佐柳島（さなぎじま）など瀬戸内の島々が見えます。
    さらに岡山県の真鍋島（まなべしま）、六島（むしま）まで望むことができます。
    また荘内半島（しょうない）、紫雲出山（しうでやま）、四国山地、讃岐富士まで見渡せます。
    島全体と周囲の海が織りなすコントラストを、俯瞰で楽しめます。

    島内の三つの山は砂州でつながり、全体の形がまるでスクリューのように見えます。
    砂州にも集落が広がり、昔からの穏やかな暮らしの息づかいを感じられます。
    朝の光に揺れる海と冬の山肌が重なり合い、粟島ならではの景色が広がります。

    粟島は3年に1度開催される「瀬戸内国際芸術祭」の舞台の一つです。
    「Missing Post Office（漂流郵便局）」など、島の風景と響き合う作品が点在しています。
    また1897年開校の日本最初の海員養成学校があり、現在は粟島海洋記念館として修復が進められています。

    瀬戸内海特有の穏やかな波が、島に流れる静かな時間をやさしく刻んでいます。
