北海道幌延町。サロベツ湿原の南端に位置する下サロベツ原野。

サロベツ湿原は、約6,700ヘクタールという日本最大級の広さを誇る高層湿原。数千年の時をかけて積み重なった「泥炭」の層が、ここでしか見られない貴重な生態系を守っています。
その広大な自然の中に佇むのが、JR宗谷本線の「下沼駅」です。 1926年の誕生から100年近い歴史を持ち、1984年の無人化以降は、かつて貨物列車で使われていた「ヨ3500形車掌車」を改造した「ダルマ駅」として愛されてきました。
2017年には廃止の危機に直面しましたが、地元の熱意により存続が決定。 駅の妖精「ぬまひきょん」が描かれたポップな外観や、木材の温もり溢れる待合室の内部、そして地元の方々が手入れする美しい花壇など、単なる駅を超えた「地域の宝箱」のような場所です。
1日に数本しか列車が止まらない、まさに秘境駅にふさわしいダイヤ。

Horonobe Town, Hokkaido. Here lies the Lower Sarobetsu Plain, situated at the southern tip of the Sarobetsu Wetlands.
Feeling the gentle Sarobetsu breeze, I am currently on a journey exploring the “7 Mystical Secluded Stations of Horonobe.”
The Sarobetsu Wetlands is one of Japan’s largest high-mooor bogs, spanning approximately 6,700 hectares. Over thousands of years, layers of peat have accumulated, protecting a precious ecosystem found nowhere else on earth.
Standing quietly amidst this vast wilderness is Shimonuma Station on the JR Soya Main Line. With nearly 100 years of history since its opening in 1926, it has been cherished as a “Daruma Station” since 1984. This unique terminal was created by repurposing a Yo-3500 series caboose once used for freight trains.
Although it faced the threat of closure in 2017, the station was saved by the passion of the local community. From its vibrant exterior featuring “Numahikyon,” the station’s fairy mascot, to the warm, wood-lined interior of the waiting room and the beautiful flower beds tended by locals—this place is truly a “community treasure chest” that transcends being just a train station.
With only a few trains stopping each day, its schedule truly defines what it means to be a “secluded station.” Please enjoy this beautiful and powerful story resting in Japan’s northernmost frontier.
