⁴ᴷ Kochi: Sukumo Station (高知県: 宿毛駅) – Japan Walking Tour (January, 2026)

I’ve decided to take an off-season trip back to my hometown in Kobe, using it as a starting point for a journey all the way around Shikoku. After traveling from Takamatsu through Kochi, Susaki, Shimanto, and Tosa-shimizu, I’ve now reached Sukumo City.

With a population of around 17,000, Sukumo has an interesting layout—the main Sukumo Station is actually located slightly outside the city center, making Higashi-Sukumo Station the one closest to the heart of town.

Though it’s a quiet town today, Sukumo once had its own small entertainment and red-light district. Records suggest it was quite modest even during its peak, with only about ten women working there. Walking through the streets today, it was fascinating to uncover these small fragments of history hidden within such calm surroundings.
