栗原市築館の双林寺境内の薬師堂は「瑠璃殿」とよばれ、「お薬師様」「杉薬師様」と親しまれいます。
天平宝字4年（760年）に孝謙天皇の勅命で開創され、天台宗の伽藍48坊を構える医王山興福寺と呼ばれていました。
火災で一堂を残すだけになり、天正19年（1591年）に再建されて「双林寺」と改称し現在に至ります。
現在の建物は寛政初年（1791-1798年）の建築とみられます。
このお寺に、奥州藤原氏の環姫（幼名：しづはた姫、後の北の方）が、平泉に向かう道中で病に倒れ、祈願したところ快癒したことから、その御礼に平泉から藤原一族が杉薬師にやって来た様子をパレードで再現したのが、つきだて薬師まつりとなります。
境内には樹齢推定1,200年超えの姥杉がありますが、藤原一行を見守ったのでしょうかね。「杉薬師様」の名はこれが由来となります。
