⁴ᴷ Mie: Matsusaka Station (三重県: 松阪駅) – Japan Walking Tour (November, 2025)
Walking in Matsusaka, Mie: From Station Arcade to the Historic Atagocho District
I’m on a journey heading toward Osaka, passing through various towns before eventually returning to Tokyo.
The trip is now in its later half. From Wakayama, I crossed the Kii Peninsula and arrived in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture. The city’s name is written as 松阪 (Matsusaka) — not “松坂 (Matsuzaka)” — and it’s pronounced without the voiced “z.” It’s an easy mistake to make, even for Japanese speakers.
From the station, I walked through the shopping street with a covered arcade and continued toward Atagocho, an area known for its small bars and nightlife. This district once flourished as the Atagocho red-light district, and even today, traces of that history can still be felt in the quiet streets.
