海が見える茨城県の絶景駅 ~日立駅~
I’m currently at JR Katsuta Station in Ibaraki Prefecture. Today, I’ll be heading north to visit JR Hitachi Station. JR Hitachi Station is known for its breathtaking ocean views. What kind of scenery will we get to see? Here comes the downbound Jōban Line train. It’s five stops from Katsuta to Hitachi, about 24 minutes by train. Departing from Katsuta Station. Passing between Tōkai Station and Ōmika Station. You can see the nuclear power plant in Tōkai Village in the distance. Kujigawa River. Momiyagawa River. Departing from Hitachi-Taga Station, right next to Hitachi. This area is lined with Hitachi factories. The ocean is coming into view! We’ve arrived at Hitachi Station. The platform looks like any other ordinary station. But as I go up the stairs, a glass-walled station building appears. And beyond that—you can see the ocean! The building seems to extend further toward the sea. There’s even a café at the far end. The current station building was completed in 2011. It was designed by world-renowned architect Kazuyo Sejima, who is originally from Hitachi City. It has won several awards, including the Good Design Award in 2012 and the Brunel Award in 2014. If you exit the ticket gate and turn right, you’ll find a viewing and event hall at the end of the walkway. This viewing hall offers the station’s best panoramic ocean view. The sun has already set, but many people are still gathered in the hall. Here’s the view from the event hall. You can clearly see the Pacific Ocean and the Hitachi Seaside Road (Route 6 Bypass) in front of it. Earlier I couldn’t film due to the crowd, but here’s the Flower Chair in the hall. It was designed by SANAA, Kazuyo Sejima’s firm, and the same chair can be found at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. Now I’ve stepped outside from the Kaigan-guchi (seaside exit). Although it’s not as high up, the view from here is also beautiful! Here’s another Flower Chair. The exterior of Hitachi Station. Near the roundabout on the seaside exit, there’s a staircase going down. This staircase not only connects to the station, but also serves as a tsunami evacuation route. Looking down from here, it’s actually quite high. Let’s keep going down the stairs. I’ve made it all the way to the bottom. This staircase is about 20 meters tall. You can see that Hitachi Station is built on top of a cliff. That’s why the station offers such stunning views. I’ve returned to the viewing hall. Since I’m here, I’ve decided to have dinner at Seabirds Café. Luckily, I got a seat facing the ocean! Here’s tonight’s dinner. I could enjoy the same ocean view from the hall while dining. Since I arrived after sunset yesterday, I’ve come back to Hitachi Station again today. At the station square, the Bell of Peace plays “The Brave One,” a song by local composer Masaru Yoshida. Let’s first head to the viewing hall from the central entrance. There was someone playing the “Station Piano” just now. The “Station Piano” is open for anyone to play, and it was first installed in Ibaraki Prefecture in 2019. Thanks to the sunshine, the ocean looks even more beautiful today! If you visit early in the morning, you might also catch a sunrise like this. Next, let’s head outside from the seaside exit. The view from the Hitachi Seaside Road also looks amazing—I’d love to drive it someday. This is what Hitachi Station looks like during the day. That’s it for today’s video. Thanks for watching!
