Arita, Saga Prefecture’s ceramic town. Arita ware, a traditional Japanese craft produced in Arita Town, is not only popular domestically, but is also recognized worldwide as ARITAYAKI. We’ll introduce you to this famous craft town. Arita’s retro streets have been designated a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. This ceramic town, Arita, has a long history spanning 400 years. The streets are lined with various ceramic shops, allowing you to enjoy shopping while strolling. Retro buildings from the Edo, Meiji, and Showa periods remain, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. Backstreets with Tonbai Walls : Turning off the main street of this retro townscape leads to backstreets with Tonbai walls. Tonbai walls are walls made of discarded firebricks (tonbai) used to build climbing kilns and disposable kiln tools, plastered with red clay. They can be found in many backstreets, from the Izumiyama Ginkgo tree area to the Arita Ceramic Museum in Otaru. Gallery Arita : If you’re visiting Arita, we highly recommend visiting Gallery Arita, located in Honmachi-Otsu, Arita Town. Enjoy dining and shopping surrounded by over 2,500 coffee cups from the Hizen ceramics region, primarily Arita ware. Choose your favorite coffee cup from the display in the store and enjoy your coffee. Enjoy meals featuring local ingredients served in Arita ware . Izumiyama Jisekiba: The birthplace of Japanese porcelain. In the early 17th century, Korean potter Yi Sam-pyeong discovered the porcelain stone used in porcelain. Since the first porcelain was created in Japan, 400 years of mining have continued, resulting in the spectacular sight we see today. Currently, mining here has almost completely ceased, and Arita ware is now made using more readily available stone from Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture. North of Arita’s main street is Sueyama Shrine, the Arita ware ancestor shrine. Affectionately known as the “god of pottery,” the shrine grounds offer many attractions. The first thing that strikes you upon arriving at Sueyama Shrine is the presence of train tracks within the grounds. The JR Kyushu Sasebo Line runs across the approach to the shrine. Numerous pieces of porcelain, showcasing the finest Arita ware techniques, are donated throughout the shrine. The most eye-catching feature is this porcelain torii gate. Its beautiful pale blue arabesque pattern is a beautiful offering. It was donated by a local potter in 1888. Torii gates are typically made of stone or wood. Porcelain torii gates are rare.
