【群馬旅】秋の絶景ロード後編!体力限界の鍾乳洞と恐怖の大吊り橋

[Music]
Hello, this is Piyo. Today, I’m heading out once again to explore autumn in Gunma. I’ve arrived at the southwesternmost village in Gunma Prefecture. In the first half, I started from Michi-no-Eki Onishi, and visited several roadside stations in order, introducing various spots along the way. Now, today we’ll resume from the point where we cross the Ueno Sky Bridge. I hope you’ll enjoy watching until the end again this time. We’ve arrived at the entrance to the Sky Bridge. You can enter here. This bridge is 225 meters long and 90 meters high—one of the largest in Japan. [Music] The sound of wind chimes is so soothing.
[Music] Time to head back. I only crossed about 30 yen’s worth, but it was way too scary. I couldn’t look down—this was enough for me. [Music] You buy your ticket here and then head toward the tunnel entrance. [Music]
And you know, it’s quite a walk to reach the entrance. I think I walked about 10 to 15 minutes. It’s a bit hard to tell, but— the slope is extremely steep, and I was already out of breath before even reaching the entrance. And here it is—the tunnel entrance. At this point, I was already gasping for air. You open this door yourself and go inside. Whoa—it’s so mystical. I was genuinely impressed. They’ve lit it up with various colors and effects. It was really entertaining and worth seeing. [Music] [Music] [Music]
And yes, I was completely out of breath again. After walking through the tunnel, I finally reached the entrance to the limestone cave. And right in front of me—there it is, a spiral staircase. Here we go. My legs were already worn out by this point, and this spiral staircase was seriously tough. [Music]
I’ve cut the footage here, but I kept going round and round— until I finally reached this level. This area was said to be full of bat droppings, so I didn’t look too closely. I was wondering where the path continued. I thought it might be through the narrow space on the right, but it was actually this way. [Music]
And sadly, another spiral staircase awaited me. [Music]
Yep, there was more. This spiral staircase was also long—round and round again. [Music]
Finally, I arrived at a large dome-shaped chamber. In the wider areas, you’ll always find benches like this— clearly placed for people whose legs are giving out. That tells you how tough this place is. This spot was also quite deep. Here, the ceiling forms an arch, and apparently, you’re supposed to crawl through it. Brutal. I ended up making some pretty undignified noises— because I was literally on all fours at this point. After climbing all those slopes and two spiral staircases, my legs were trembling. And even here, I had to crouch to keep moving forward. This pillar here—what was it called again? Something like “Kongō Staff”— they say if you rub it seven times, your wish will come true. But I was too out of breath to make any wishes. The ceiling was so low here, I had to stay hunched over the whole time. [Music] The ceiling was really low, so I had to be careful not to hit my head. If possible, wear a helmet—or at least a hat—for safety. Walking hunched over here was truly exhausting. Also, the ground wasn’t leveled, so it felt pretty unstable. Wearing riding boots turned out to be a bit of a regret. There were all kinds of signs—like “Jizo Something”—but I didn’t have the energy to read them. I was just desperately searching for the exit. I’d love to include the actual sound, but it’s just me panting like an old man— so I figured that wouldn’t be ideal and decided to dub over it. Just when I thought I saw daylight and the end was near, the path kept going downward. A bat just flew by. [Music]
Exit Finally, I saw a sign that said “Exit,” and I felt relieved. But honestly, the path continued beyond that— and once I saw the exit sign, I just wanted to get out. So I gave up and headed outside, feeling a bit defeated. And here’s the exit. Remember how I climbed all the way up to the entrance earlier? Now I had to go back down— with my legs completely shot, descending a steep slope. That was brutal. So yes, this place is fascinating, but if you plan to visit, make sure you wear comfortable shoes and come in good shape. [Music]
That combo of cave and bridge really left me feeling defeated. Yep, total exhaustion. Alright, it’s past 11:30 now, so I guess it’s time to think about lunch. Let’s see… [Music]
We’re heading back to Route 299. Along Route 299, there’s a place that serves Jukkoku miso ramen and wild boar ramen. It’s usually packed on weekends, but since today’s a weekday, I might give it a try. Let’s go check it out. I’ve heard the wild boar chashu is really tasty. Are they open? Ah, looks like they are. Where should I park? [Music]
[Applause] [Music]
[Applause] [Music] Alright, let’s go. Turning left here takes you to Osutaka Ridge. We’re heading deeper into the mountains. After this, we’ll head toward Nanmoku Village. If you go straight, you’ll reach the pass and enter Nagano Prefecture. We’ll turn right here to enter Nanmoku Village. Instead of crossing the pass, we’ll go through a long tunnel. It’s quite a long tunnel, and today it’ll probably feel cold. Looks like the autumn colors are starting to show. The lush summer green is fading a bit. Here we are at Yunozawa Tunnel. Man, it’s cold in here. And long. So cold. So long. Yep, it’s freezing. But Nanmoku Village is a great place. The river is beautiful too. Turning right here takes you to Shimonita, but on the left— there’s a stunning gorge. Let’s go take a look. This area seems to be the center. [Music] We’ve arrived at Semi Gorge. Is there somewhere to park? This place is really nice. Can you see the gorge? Probably not. Hold on— There, can you see it? Like this. Just like this. How’s that? Can you see it? Semi Gorge collects spring water and mountain runoff— making the water incredibly clear. It’s clean enough for fish like char, sweetfish, and yamame to live here. And the steep V-shaped gorge is a striking feature. The complex flow of water is really beautiful. This is Semi Bridge. The view of the gorge from up here— especially during autumn—becomes a breathtaking scene with vibrant reds and yellows. It’s a top spot for autumn foliage. I highly recommend visiting during that season. [Music] That was Semi Gorge. What a fantastic place. It was truly a scenic gem. Now, let’s pass through Nanmoku Village— and head toward Shimonita. Nanmoku Village has a roadside station called Oasis Nanmoku. It’s located by the river, and you can walk down to the water. In summer, kids play in the river there. Sometimes you’ll see a group of quirky adults getting swept away too. That’s the place. But I think I’ll skip it today. Not stopping, huh? They do sell soft-serve ice cream though. We’ve arrived in Shimonita. How was this trip through southwestern Gunma? We exited the Kan-Etsu Expressway at Fujioka, then headed toward Kanna Town— and followed Route 462 westward, stopping at various roadside stations. It’s a great drive route. Especially in autumn—mid to late October through November—the foliage is at its peak. So I highly recommend visiting during that time. There’s a limestone cave, a long suspension bridge, and lots of delicious food— so please come and enjoy. Now, I’m hopping on the Joshinetsu Expressway. After all that action Now, I’m hopping on the Joshinetsu Expressway. After all that action in Fudidō, I’m totally drained. So I’m heading home via the expressway. That’s the beauty of the V-Strom. Even a 250cc would be fine, but being able to do this makes me appreciate the mid-size class. [Music]
