Goshogahara & Ushikubi Road | July 2025 [4K Binaural]
This video captures Goshogahara, an abandoned village, and a part of the historic Ushikubi Road in Kitadani, Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, recorded in July 2025.
Goshogahara originated as a seasonal “dedukuri” settlement by residents of Ushikubi (now known as Shiramine in Ishikawa). By the Meiji era it was inhabited year-round, but over time—due to depopulation and changes in transportation—it became deserted. Today, faint remains of stone terraces and house sites quietly evoke its past.
The Ushikubi Road was once a vital mountain route connecting Katsuyama to Shiramine (the former Ushikubi Village) via Tani Pass (Fukui–Ishikawa border)—a distance of roughly 7 ri (28 km). It was used for transport, pilgrimage, and trade from the Edo through Taisho periods. Shiramine’s fame for Ushikubi Tsumugi, a traditional silk fabric, reflects the craftsmanship of the region, and the name “Ushikubi” itself comes from the local worship of Gozu Tennō (Ushigashira deity), attributed to the priest Taichō the ancient founder of Hakusan faith.
This footage immerses the viewer in the village’s silence and the lingering historical atmosphere of the mountain path—capturing the subtle sounds of wind, birdsong, and footsteps. It reveals a hidden rural heritage of Hokuriku beyond modern roads.
Translation for the information board at 0:00.
This road has long been one of the important routes connecting Kaga and Echizen provinces, linking Katsuyama castle town with the foothills of Mount Hakusan. The former Shirakawa Village (now Hakusan City) at the foot of Mount Hakusan was called “Ushikubi Village” until the early Meiji period, and this road was known by the people of Katsuyama as the “Ushikubi Road.”
Many people traveled this road, and numerous goods were transported by foot carriers (bokka).
~Overview of the Forest Amenity Facility Development Project~
Katsuyama City has been promoting an ecomuseum project since 2000 (Heisei 12), based on the concept that “the entire region is a museum.”
The Kitadani district contains many natural and historical heritage sites, but these individual heritage sites are separated by mountains and rivers.
This project has established walking trails to connect these heritage sites so that visitors can fully enjoy the nature of the Kitadani district.
