Hello everyone. It’s been a while. This is Aoi. I’m heading to Kyoto today. However, due to overtourism, Kyoto’s famous tourist spots are apparently overcrowded these days. So, I thought, “Even though I’m traveling to Kyoto, I won’t be going to the usual places.” I’m going to utilize my lifelong knowledge of Japanese history to avoid the tourists as much as possible. First, I’ll head to Narita Airport from Keisei Ueno Station. The standard way to get to Kyoto is by Shinkansen, but this time I’ll take an LCC from Narita. For solo travelers like me who travel light, it’s cheaper to travel by LCC than by Shinkansen. By the way, I’m planning to stay for three nights and four days, and my only luggage will be a tote bag and a small body bag. A suitcase? I won’t need something that’s too cumbersome. Let’s start with the Keisei Skyliner. I purchased my ticket online in advance. The Skyliner was fully booked that day. I’ll arrive at Airport Terminal 2 Station. Since I’m taking Jetstar, I’ll be using Terminal 3. It’s a short walk from the Airport Terminal 2 Station. I boarded the 2:10 PM flight to Kansai International Airport. Even though it’s a low-cost carrier, Peach uses Terminal 1, so be careful. Jetstar weighs your carry-on luggage before boarding, and if it passes the weight limit, you’ll receive a tag. I always buy a 500 yen in-flight voucher before boarding a Jetstar flight. I encounter a lot of Miyakumyaku (mysterious creatures) when I visit Kansai. I bought one because I saw my favorite Sanrio collaboration. It’s very convenient, as Kansai Airport is directly connected to Kansai Airport Station. And as expected, it’s full of Miyakumyaku. This time, I took the JR line to Tsuruhashi. This is Tsuruhashi’s famous Kintetsu transfer gate. From here, I took the Kintetsu line to Nara. Yes, I’m staying in Nara, not Kyoto. Good morning the next day. I stayed at a hotel near Kintetsu Nara Station. Accommodation prices are high in Kyoto and Osaka, so I recommend staying in Nara. It’s also easily accessible to both Osaka and Kyoto. Kintetsu is seriously amazing. Speaking of Nara Station(JR), this old Nara Station is famous. There’s even a Starbucks inside. This is what modern Nara Station looks like. It’s incredibly beautiful. I’m so happy to finally be riding a reversible cross-seat train and an empty one after such a long time. I got off at Rokujizo Station. From there, I transferred to the Tozai Subway Line. Those full-screen doors are amazing. While there’s a downside to not being able to see the train, I really like these full-screen door type stations. They’re kind of futuristic and exciting, aren’t they? In Tokyo, the only ones like them are the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line, Nippori-Toneri Liner, and Yurikamome Line. Were there any others? When I hear the Tozai Line, Tokyo residents like me tend to think of the sky blue color of the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, but the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line’s color is vermilion. It really feels Kyoto-like. Since it’s the first train, the train is practically empty. We’ve arrived. Which station is it? Ono Station. My first destination is Zuishin-in Temple. Zuishin-in Temple is a temple associated with Ono no Komachi. One of the world’s three most beautiful women, Ono no Komachi, has many theories about her birth and final years, and much remains unknown. However, we’ve all heard her waka poems. After all, they appear in the Hyakunin Isshu (a collection of poems by 100 poets). It’s taught in compulsory education. According to one legend, Ono no Komachi spent her final years as a valiant attendant. Another theory is that Ono no Komachi was born in Akita, which is why many things related to Akita are often named Komachi, such as the Akita Komachi and the Komachi bullet train on the Akita Shinkansen. While the temple apparently offers services in other languages, when I visited, there were only a few Japanese tourists, so it didn’t feel like a typical tourist destination. My impression was that the place was filled with people who genuinely loved temples and history. The modern translation of this phrase is, “The flowers’ colors have faded in vain, As I gazed upon them, they faded away in vain. During the long spring rains. My appearance has also completely faded. While I was lost in thought, I realized, ” Isn’t it wonderful to be immersed in the world of waka poetry like this? It’s like people’s worries haven’t changed in 1,000 years.” I paid the 500 yen admission fee to enter. Cameras are allowed everywhere except where there are signs prohibiting photography. The silence, filled only with the sound of cicadas, is a beauty you won’t find in typical tourist spots. It seems there’s something behind the temple grounds. This is Seiryu Gongen-do Hall. It’s likely that Zennyo Ryuo is enshrined here. Zennyo Ryuo is the dragon goddess whom Kukai enshrined when praying for rain.
