行ってよかった!十勝帯広・音更エリアのグルメと観光スポット【北海道旅行】

Hello from the Tokachi Plain in Hokkaido! This time, we’re exploring the Tokachi area, a treasure trove of Japanese cuisine. Especially around Obihiro and Otofuke, which are easy for sightseeing. We’ll introduce 12 must-visit gourmet and sightseeing spots you’ll love! From soul food beloved by locals to jaw-dropping sweets! And even breathtaking natural scenery that will refresh your soul! We’ve packed it all in for you, so let’s dive right in! Let’s get started! First up, a soul food adored by Obihiro residents: Curry Shop Indian. With 11 locations in Tokachi, mainly in Obihiro, and 2 in Kushiro. By the way, most large cities in Hokkaido have CoCo Ichibanya, but for some reason, Obihiro doesn’t! They tried opening a branch a few times,
but couldn’t beat Indian’s popularity and had to close. Now, there are three types of curry. If it’s your first time, we recommend the Indian curry roux! Packed with beef, mildly spicy,
and made from dozens of carefully matured spices. Other curry roux options include: The Basic roux – a simple curry with beef extract and the sweetness of onions. Vegetable roux – loaded with local vegetables. You can also choose from five different toppings. Spiciness can be adjusted on a 5-level scale. Locals even bring their own pots for takeout. This is just a normal daily sight here! (laughs) Next, a must-visit when in Obihiro is the popular bakery “Masuya Pan Mugine.” There’s also a Masuya Pan in central Obihiro, but if the weather’s nice, I recommend heading out to the suburban Mugine store. Masuya’s charm is its bread made with 100% Tokachi wheat! The aroma of wheat spreads gently, making you happy even before you take a bite. Of course, there’s bread and croissants, as well as a wide variety of savory and sweet breads – you’ll really struggle to choose! Another highlight is the location itself! You can enjoy freshly baked bread on the terrace, overlooking the spacious lawn and blue sky. Locals and tourists alike spend time here leisurely, bread in hand – it’s truly everyday life in Tokachi. Even if you’re not a bread lover, it’s worth stopping by! It’s the perfect bakery to enjoy the blessings of Tokachi in every bite. Next up, another place to see at least once when visiting Obihiro: Banei Tokachi. The only place in the world where “Banei horse racing” takes place. Born in the Meiji era when draft horses were raced,
Banei racing is unique to this region. It carries the history and tradition of Hokkaido’s pioneering days. Unlike regular horse racing, which is all about speed,
Banei racing is a little different. Draft horses weighing over a ton pull heavy iron sleds,
competing for strength and endurance. The sheer force as they thunder past is so impressive
that first-timers can’t help but shout. There are two slopes on the course – both horses and spectators give it their all. Seeing them pull the sled uphill makes you want to cheer,
“Go for it!” Since I don’t know much, let’s just buy a random bet. Win bet – #7 Sadano Beppin. And we’re off! Even taking a break is an important strategy in this race. The announcer clearly has a Hokkaido accent. Build up momentum! It’s exciting just to watch. A perfect hit! For some reason, you win when you’re not greedy. Inside the venue, you can also meet adorable animals! Ponies with their foals, goats, and other cute animals you can interact with. You can feed carrots or even ride a pony – a hit with families. There’s also a market for vegetables and souvenirs. Night races are held too, and watching the horses under the lights doubles the excitement! A gourmet and interactive entertainment spot representing Obihiro. When it comes to Obihiro sweets, Rokkatei is a must. A long-established confectionery over 100 years old,
loved by locals and tourists alike. The main store offers exclusive sweets with cute designs! Here, relax at the café and enjoy freshly made treats. The Marusei Butter Sandwich is a must, of course. But seasonal and Obihiro main-store limited items are also plentiful! Choosing what to eat is half the fun. The interior is luxurious and so comfortable, you’ll want to stay longer. If you crave sweets in Obihiro, don’t hesitate – head straight to the Rokkatei main store! And here’s another highlight! For local Obihiro sweets, “Cranberry” is a must-visit. They offer special sweets you can only taste here! The signature item is the gigantic sweet potato. Sold by weight, the fluffy sweet potato and buttery flavor fill your mouth. Just seeing the cut slice makes your excitement soar! This is a treat only for visitors to Tokachi. Cookies and pies are also popular, perfect as souvenirs. But if you visit, you definitely want to try the main-store sweet potato! “A special taste you can only get in Tokachi.” That’s the charm of Cranberry’s main store. When it comes to Obihiro gourmet, pork rice bowls are a must. At “Tonta,” the highlight is their secret sauce,
stirred over 40 years! Mildly sweet and fragrant, it pairs perfectly with the pork. You’ll keep eating bowl after bowl! Its popularity means there’s a line every day – a true local gem. What’s great is that you can choose the cut of pork. The classic loin, or the belly with its sweet fat. For those who prefer something lighter, there’s the tenderloin. Of course, all the pork used is from Tokachi. Each slice is carefully hand-cut, selecting only the softest parts. Carrying on the founder’s idea of
“not just selling pork bowls, but selling care and effort,” everything is still made with care today. Even with generous portions, the prices are reasonable compared to other restaurants. It’s easy to see why office workers and locals keep coming back. The bright interior with wood accents has counter seats and raised tatami seating, making it comfortable whether you’re alone or with family. If you’re craving a hearty meat meal in Obihiro, “Tonda” is a must-visit! Now, the previously mentioned “Tonda” often gets crowded and forms long lines, so let me introduce another recommended pork bowl restaurant. We arrived at “Butadon no Kashiwa.” It’s located in Otofuke, just across the river from central Obihiro. Obihiro and Otofuke are neighboring towns,
just across the river, an easy drive away. “Kashiwa” is also a beloved local spot for pork bowls. They carefully grill tender Tokachi pork over charcoal, finishing it with a slightly sweet sauce — a foolproof style! Even if Tonda is crowded, you can enjoy your meal here at a relaxed pace. Personally, even though it’s the same dish, each place has its own charm;
honestly, I want you to try both. Next is “Michi-no-Eki Otofuke Natsuzora no Furusato,”
packed with local charm. Located south of Otofuke-Obihiro IC on the Doto Expressway,
it’s a hub for sightseeing and gourmet food. Here, all of Tokachi’s “deliciousness” comes together in one place. At the “Natsuzora Market,” you can find fresh vegetables and specialty products harvested by local farmers. You can even check out Otofuke’s specialty, the Otofuke Oosodeburi soybeans. There’s also a section for dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt from Yotsuba Dairy, as well as locally raised beef. It’s a place where you can enjoy not just farm produce but also livestock products. Sweets made with Tokachi dairy, like ice cream, cheese tarts, catalana, and tiramisu, are plentiful. They also have a wide selection of souvenirs, from general Hokkaido gifts to Tokachi-exclusive items, so you can indulge in picking your favorites. The food court and takeout restaurants are also well-equipped! You can enjoy Tokachi local specialties like pork bowls and Indian curry, as well as ramen, udon, and even white omelets — a fun lineup to try. There are even Michi-no-Eki limited menus, so don’t miss them. It’s family-friendly, with a kids’ corner. Perfect for a rest stop during your journey. The bright white “OTOFUKE” monument against the blue sky is a photo spot you’ll want to capture. A Michi-no-Eki where you can enjoy both sightseeing and gourmet food —
that’s “Natsuzora no Furusato”! Right next to Michi-no-Eki Otofuke is Obihiro’s iconic confectionery, Ryugetsu’s Sweetpia Garden. It’s a store with a large factory attached, and factory tours are completely free! You can see the process of making sweets and enjoy the fun of creation — truly a sweets theme park. Inside, there’s a shop with baked goods, Japanese sweets, and cakes, a café for soft serve and seasonal menu items, and a workshop where you can experience making sweets yourself. Sweetpia Garden has popular menu items that can only be enjoyed here. Of course, Ryugetsu’s signature “Sanporoku” is also abundantly available. This Baumkuchen, resembling birch logs, has been a long-time favorite for over 50 years. If you visit Sweetpia Garden early in the morning, you might even get the edge pieces of Sanporoku at a discount. Even on weekdays, lines form before opening due to its popularity. In the factory tour, you can see how the birch pattern is drawn on chocolate, and watch the making of the “An Butter San” using Hokkaido ingredients. Sweetpia Garden lets you experience the joy of making sweets firsthand. Enjoy a sweet moment unique to Tokachi right here! Next, we’ll visit Tokachigawa Onsen in the Otofuke area! A natural hot spring in the vast Tokachi Plain,
it’s a very popular spot for tourists. Tokachigawa Onsen is famous for its “mōru onsen” (moss spring) with soft brown water said to have beautifying effects and warms you from the core. The silky water feels astonishingly smooth on the skin. The town has day-use bath facilities and foot baths, so you don’t need to stay at a hotel to enjoy them. Plus, hot spring hotels and Michi-no-Eki offer local gourmet food and souvenirs. Relax in the onsen and explore at your own pace,
enjoying the charm of Tokachi. Tokachigawa Onsen not only heals fatigue, but also offers beautiful scenery and gourmet food —
a place to feel Tokachi’s nature and culture. Why not stretch your legs and warm up in a hot spring? Next, we visited Tokachi Farm. The famous row of white birch trees leads to the entrance of this vast farm. On both sides of the straight road, white-barked birches line up, a scenic spot representing Tokachi. The magnificent Hokkaido landscape will make you say “Wow…” without thinking. This tree-lined road is popular for movies and commercials, and is loved by both tourists and locals. The scenery changes with the seasons:
spring brings fresh greenery, summer a vivid green tunnel, autumn golden hues, and winter snowy birches that shine beautifully. There’s an observatory ahead where you can take in the Tokachi Plain and Hidaka Mountains. You can truly feel the scale of the land. Even a short stop for photos during a drive is very rewarding. This is definitely one of Tokachi’s photogenic spots! Next is Naitai Highland Farm in Kamishihoro Town. Drive or ride up to an altitude of 800 meters, and in front of you spreads a panoramic view of the Tokachi Plain. The view of Tokachi from here is breathtaking! At the top is Naitai Terrace. The glass-walled building gives the feeling of floating in the sky while enjoying the view. The café inside is popular for dishes using local ingredients. There are also farm-style sweets like soft serve and cheesecake. It’s a favorite spot for those on drives or tours. Cows leisurely grazing on the vast green carpet… this is the quintessential Hokkaido scenery. How was it? This time, I introduced my favorite Tokachi spots that I actually visited. Special places you’ll love! Tokachi gourmet that satisfies both heart and stomach, magnificent landscapes of vast farms and birch-lined roads, and the relaxing warmth of hot springs that makes you forget the time. Each place is one you’ll think “I’m glad I came,” and you’ll want to visit again every time you recall it. Next, go find your own “I’m glad I came” experience in this land. Every visit brings new discoveries and excitement. That’s Hokkaido — the Tokachi area.
