This time, we drove along a group of previously unrecorded, narrow, and rugged roads in the Higashikubiki Hills, which stretch across central Niigata Prefecture. Because the recording took so long, we released it in two parts.
The first part of the ride heads east on Prefectural Route 341. After a while, we passed through Hosue village, a mountain village dotted with waterways crisscrossing the gentle mountain slopes, traditional Echigo-style houses, and private forests. It also preserves an environment where terraced rice fields and satoyama flora and fauna live. For this reason, the area has been designated an “Important Satoyama” by the Ministry of the Environment.
The middle part of the ride follows Prefectural Route 455. Along the way, we come across a huge civil engineering structure spanning the road. This is a facility operated by East Japan Railway Company, a waterway that supplies water from a reservoir to a hydroelectric power plant.

今回のルートは、新潟県の小千谷の南側辺りを東西に通っている県道ですね。新潟らしく走りやすい２車線区間もありますが、それなりに狭い箇所もあったりするので、やはり地元住民くらいしか利用しない道なんでしょうね。サムネポイントの途中で通過している構造物は、パッと見は付近を通る上越新幹線のシェルター付き高架橋かと思いましたが、あれは同じJRの関連施設ではあるものの、水力発電の水路なんですね。後半の越後川口辺りの道路(県道196号とか県道71号とか)は、道はやや狭めな所はあるものの、国道117号から国道17号への抜け道ルートっぽいですね。
