A rustic, retro hot spring, Mimata Onsen. Press the subtitle button or CC button to enjoy the full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watatabi. This time, I’m heading to a hot spring in Shimane Prefecture. I’ve also found a hidden gem of a scenic spot in the area, so I’d like to introduce it to you. The location is Hamada City in the Iwami region in the western part of Shimane Prefecture. I’m heading to Mimata Onsen, a retro hot spring that suddenly appears in the mountains. I drive through several tunnels and further into the mountains. Just as the signal started to weaken, the original Japanese landscape and nature spread out around me. First, I head to Hanzakebuchi in Ochi District. I think it’s a hidden gem of a scenic spot that not many people know about except for locals. I’ll arrive soon. I’ve arrived. There’s a parking space like this. The entrance to the waterfall seems to be here, so I’d like to head there right away. The place I’m heading to now is called “Hanzakebuchi”, and in Shimane Prefecture, giant salamanders are called “Hanzake”. Maybe giant salamanders live there. I don’t know where the name comes from though. The entrance to the waterfall is here. I looked it up. This is a place you won’t know unless you look it up. By the way, this is the route. Well then… let’s head there . The entrance is behind the house. Okay, let’s head there. Eh? ??? ??? There’s no sidewalk right now… is it okay… I guess not many people go there. It’s pretty overgrown. Is it okay? I can hear the sound of the river right next to me, so I think I’ll walk along the river from here. It’s kind of like a path. Below is a cliff over 5m high. It’s easier to walk than I thought. I imagined it would be rougher, but it seems to be okay. It feels like it’s gradually becoming a path. I’m not sure if I’ll come across a bear, but I’ll wear a bear bell. There are so many… frogs… and they’re quite big. There are a lot of frogs that look to be about 10cm long flying around. Which way is it? This way? Or this way? Hmm, which way is it? Let’s go this way. Did it rain yesterday? Or is it a water passage? The ground is really bad. It’s amazing. Can I get through? It’s pretty muddy. These are boar footprints. It seems like boars are around. Am I on the right track… There are so many spider webs. I’ll use this tree branch to clear the spider webs as I go. This area is pretty flat, and there are stone walls, so maybe people used to live here. Do giant salamanders live in places like this? I know it’s a natural monument, so I’m not allowed to touch them, but I’d like to see a wild giant salamander at least once. Um, which way is it? There’s a river running next to me, and if I go down this river at worst I’ll reach the house I was at earlier, so if I can’t find it anymore, I’ll follow this river back. I came across another stone wall. Do I have to cross the river? The road ends here. It’s nature. This looks like a road. I think a giant salamander might live here. The river itself is quite shallow, so even if I get stuck, it’s no problem. There are stone walls around here too. And I’m not sure if this is the right path, but for now, the river is flowing on the right side. Should I continue going up this river? I should have worn rain boots. There are no traces of human presence, so maybe this way … If there was even a slight path, I could have continued. There is no path, so… Ah, maybe this? No, maybe not… Let’s continue on here for now. This must be a very humid place. It’s very mossy. The camera lens was full of spider webs. I came out to the river again. It’s a bit cool around here. It’s very windy. I go further in through the mossy greenery. Is this the way? The path… seems like it’s this way. Ah!! There it is. It was pretty close. The atmosphere is great! Amazing! Hanzakebuchi (waterfall) A small gorge suddenly appears. Although it is small, it is overwhelming when you stand there. The space created by nature over many years creates a mysterious atmosphere. This waterfall continues to flow without anyone noticing. We have arrived. This is it. Wow! Amazing! It is quite dark to the naked eye. It also feels a little scary. It looks like we can get close, so we will go. This rock is very moss-covered and slippery, so we have to be careful. No, it’s amazing! We came almost directly under the waterfall. It looks like this. It seems to be quite deep. I think it is deep enough to submerge your thighs. I think there is a time when the sun shines for a moment, and I think that time is probably terribly beautiful. It is surrounded by large rock walls, so it is very overwhelming when you stand here. This is a truly mysterious and magnificent view. I ‘m going back to the parking lot now, but I forgot to measure the time, so I’ll measure how long it takes from this waterfall to the parking lot. Since the road is flat, I think it takes the same time to go and come back. Let’s go back. It’s Saturday, but there are no customers. 8:42. Oh, it’s 43 minutes now. Well, I’ll start at 43 minutes and head back. I went looking in the river, but unfortunately there were no giant salamanders. I heard the cicadas for the first time this year. There are traces of a waterway from the river on the other side, so there may have been life here. It’s a very old-looking building. Is it a storehouse? This area is very overgrown, but it’s completely fine from 50 meters onwards. So I headed back. The current time is 8:56, so it’s 13 minutes. I was able to get back in 13 minutes. It took 13 minutes to go slowly, so if you go at a faster pace, the waterfall is about 10 minutes or less away. If you’re interested, please go and see it. Now, I’m heading towards my next destination. There’s a place called “Aosasa Kannon” just a short drive from here, so I’ll go there for a bit, to see what it’s like. There’s no signal here, so I can’t use the navigation system. I went a little further and got a signal. It’s really going up. We’re almost there, 300 meters left. This is the parking lot. There seems to be a parking lot in the back, but it seems you can’t go there right now. For now, I’ll walk from here. Let’s go. It says “approach to the shrine,” so I think there’s probably a shrine up ahead. The sun is shining and it’s getting hot. It’s not very popular, even on Saturday. By the way, it’s Saturday, the first day of a three-day weekend. If there are no people here, that means there are no people here on a regular basis. I walked about 300 meters, but it’s been like this the whole time. The cicadas are chirping and it’s already summer. The waterfall I saw earlier and this green feeling remind me of summer vacation. I feel nostalgic as I remember summer vacation. They really were doing construction. Was there a landslide or something? That can’t be helped. What kind of butterfly is this… a black and purple butterfly. Wow! Amazing! It’s a waterfall! There’s a shrine on top of the waterfall. The view from here is really nice. Aosasa Kannon Falls A clear waterfall with a drop of about 30 meters suddenly appears in front of you. A Kannon hall stands next to the waterfall, and it is a famous spot surrounded by silence and mystery that has been worshiped by local people since ancient times. It’s kind of amazing. There is a shrine here, so nature and this man-made object are in harmony to create a mysterious space. I’ll go towards the shrine. There is quite a drop. It looks like we have to go up the stairs from here. There is a building built in the rock. It’s the same as the previous place, but there are so many mystical places in such a short place. It is in front of a waterfall, so I think it is Fudoson. It is quite high up. There are still more stairs. There is a sign that says please open the door freely and pray. It is very clean like this. I wonder if it is managed by local people. Fudo Myo-o is enshrined. I went to pray. I did not light candles or incense because I am afraid of handling fire. There is still a road here, so I would like to go there. There are beautiful flowers blooming. The leaves have a beautiful shape. It is a very clear river. It is very small, but there are many fish. The road continues. Where on earth does this go… There doesn’t seem to be anything on the map, but I have a feeling that it will connect to a road. We are on the road. It is the road along the parking lot where we parked earlier . Let’s go back. I’ve sweated quite a bit, so I want to take a bath in the hot spring, but when I went there before, the restaurants were closed, so today I’d like to use the restaurant at the hot spring. Now, let’s head towards the hot spring. It will probably take about an hour. I don’t know because there is no signal and I can’t use the navigation system. I got a signal. It seems to be 30 minutes from here. It’s 22km away. This is Mitamata Onsen in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. It was opened about 150 years ago, so it is still a hot spring with a short history. Even though it has a short history, it feels quite old when it is said to be at the end of the Edo period. There are eight hot spring inns and two day-trip hot spring facilities in the hot spring town. The spring quality is alkaline simple spring, with a pH value of 9.9, so it is a very thick hot spring. This time, I would like to take a bath at the “National Health Center” directly opposite. There was something like a shrine here. It seems there is a legend. To put it simply, a kappa lived here, and it seems that the kappa entered the stable through an underground cave and stole the horse’s liver. If things continue like this, people are worried that it will cause harm to people, so they built this shrine and started a memorial service to console the spirit of the kappa. There is a river flowing next to it, and many small fish are swimming in it. This is the public bath, and there is another accommodation facility and public bath here. There is a foot bath. It seems to be open 24 hours a day. This is a hot spring guide map, and it looks like this, with inns and day-use bathing facilities lined up. This is the inn district. This is the foot bath of Mitamata Onsen. The temperature of this foot bath right now is… 45.6 degrees. But I’m here, so I’ll go in. By the way, the foot bath is free. Sorry, I misread the internet and it said it was open from 10:00 to 20:00. It’s hot! It’s too hot to get in. It’s a bit painful to get in this hot spring in this scorching heat. It’s really retro. This is an inn. This is also an inn, and the one over there that says “Motoyu” is a day-use bathing facility. On the right here is Yakushi Shrine. It looks like this. The moment I opened the door, a cold breeze came in and it felt really good. There were a lot of bees so I closed it. This was Yakushi Shrine. The hot spring town ends here. So I want to take a stroll around the back alleys here. It’s pretty overgrown with grass, but it’s like a promenade. The road isn’t that rough. What is it? On the left here, there are two graves lined up. I came out to a great place. I climbed up to a pretty high place. There is something enshrined inside. It looks like this. There are lots of bugs inside. Can I go this way too? It takes a lot of courage to go through here. I don’t know if I can get through. I’ll turn back. I’m sure it will connect to somewhere over there. There were a lot of bugs stuck to my pants. I’m back. This time, it’s this way. Tourists don’t usually come to places like this. Up ahead are private houses. If you go further to the other side, there is another accommodation facility. I’ll go in here. It won first place in the “moist skin category” in the 2023 Hot Spring General Election. The bathing fee is 600 yen per adult. This side of the souvenir shop is the large bath. The third floor is the men’s bath, and the fourth floor is the women’s bath. I can’t take pictures here, so I’ll go. I went to take a bath. Here is the menu. Fish set meal, meat set meal, and rice bowl. There’s curry rice, udon, soba, and alcohol and soft drinks. I chose this fried chicken set meal. It was 1100 yen. My wife chose the shrimp fry set meal, which is a bit expensive, 1300 yen. I’m not really convinced lol. It’s a fried chicken set meal. Is it a vinegared dish? It came with vinegared dishes, six pieces of fried chicken, salad and miso soup. This is the shrimp fry set meal. The shrimp in the shrimp fry are opened shrimp . It also came with sashimi. What is this with salmon? The rest is the same. It comes with miso soup, rice, vinegared dishes and pickles. I’ve finished the hot springs and the meal. The hot spring was quite hot, about 45 degrees. It was a very thick spring. Shampoo and conditioner were provided, and there were five showers on either side of the changing room, five on the right and five on the left, for a total of ten. There was a fairly large large bath, a jet bath, and a cold bath and sauna on the right. There was no open-air bath. It was very thick, but it was quite hot so I couldn’t stay in it for long. But the spring quality was definitely good. It seems that a new facility will be built. It seems that an outdoor bath for day-use bathing will be built. There is a vacant lot next to this day-use bathing facility, and I think the new hot spring facility will probably be built here, but for now it is untouched. I received a pamphlet at the hot spring just now, and in the 2024 Hot Spring General Election, this Mitamata Onsen is ranked first in the beautiful skin category. Asahi Onsen, here, took first place in the history and culture category in 2024. Arifuku Onsen is third in the secret hot springs category. Kazenokuni Onsen is third in the “hot spring cure/wellness category.” I don’t know much about this Kazenokuni Onsen. Where is it? So, there are many hot springs in this area alone that are ranked in the top three. This time, we visited the hidden gem of Shimane Prefecture and Mitamata Onsen. What did you think? Please visit it! See you again in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.

Unbelivable how such a beautiful waterfall is not visited at all. :O
Thank you for sharing!
PH9.7 or 9.9 ?
You absolutely need to explore other onsen listed in that brochure. They sound pretty impressive!
That round building at the entrance of the hot spring town was that a hotel? Why was it so closed?
Thank you for the video🥰 As I see it, a stick is the best international weapon against spiderwebs and nettles🤣
On my first trip to Japan, I visited Tsuwano and Matsue in Shimane-ken, and I really loved it there. I hope to return to Shimane-ken soon, and thanks to this lovely video Watatabi-san, I have new ideas for places to visit.
Such a beautiful area.
