ここは島根県出雲市の斐川町。宍道湖の西に広がる、豊かな出雲平野の一角です。この平野は、斐伊川が長い歳月をかけて運んできた土砂によって形づくられました。
古くは、スサノヲノミコトが八岐大蛇を退治した後、この地で稲を植え、米作りをするよう人々に教えたという言い伝えも残っています。今もなお、出雲の人々はその教えを受け継ぐように、丁寧に田を耕し、米を育てています。
出雲の自然は、どこまでも穏やかです。険しい山も、荒々しい海岸線もなく、気候もどこか優しい。この地の風土が、そのまま人々の心を映しているようにも感じます。
そして、何より心を奪われるのが、出雲の落日ではないでしょうか。神話の「国譲り」に重なるように、静かに沈んでいく夕陽は、この地に不思議な余韻を残し、見る人の心に深く刻まれていきます。
けれど、落日もさることながら、出雲の朝もまた格別です。
とくに田んぼに水が張られる季節には、その美しさが際立ちます。
穏やかな気候のもと、風もなく、鏡のような水面には空の雲が映し出され、まるで天と地が溶け合うよう。やがて朝陽が昇ると、水面はキラキラと煌めき始め、そこにはもうひとつの出雲の神話が、静かに映し出されているかのように思えてなりません。

This is Hikawa Town in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture—part of the fertile Izumo Plain that stretches west of Lake Shinji.
This plain was formed over countless years by sediment carried down by the Hii River.

According to ancient legend, after defeating the fearsome Yamata-no-Orochi, the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto taught the people to plant rice and cultivate the land here. Even today, the people of Izumo continue this tradition, carefully tending to their rice fields with deep reverence.

The nature of Izumo is gentle and serene.
There are no rugged mountains or harsh coastlines, and even the climate feels kind. It’s as if the landscape itself reflects the gentle spirit of its people.

And above all, what truly captivates the heart is the sunset in Izumo.
Like the myth of the “Transfer of the Land,” the sun sinks quietly beyond the horizon, leaving behind a mysterious afterglow that lingers in the hearts of those who witness it.

Yet, as breathtaking as the sunsets are, the mornings in Izumo are just as special.
Especially in the season when water fills the rice paddies, their beauty becomes truly remarkable.
In the stillness of Izumo’s mild climate, with hardly a breeze, the sky and clouds are mirrored on the surface of the water, as if heaven and earth are melting into one.
Then, as the morning sun rises, the water begins to shimmer with golden light—
and in that radiant reflection, it feels as though yet another of Izumo’s ancient myths is quietly being told.
