Today I’m heading to Komatsu Castle in Ishikawa Prefecture. I’ll get off at Komatsu Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the station to Komatsu Castle. Komatsu Castle was once the base of the Ikko Ikki rebels. Later, Shibata Katsuie attacked it, and the Niwa clan and others became the lords of the castle. During the Edo period, it became part of the Kaga domain and was once abandoned. However, in 1639, it was rebuilt as a retirement castle for the third feudal lord, Maeda Toshitsune. I came to Ashi Castle Park. Ashi Castle Park was built on the site of the Sannomaru of Komatsu Castle. It seems to be a stroll-style garden with a pond. Here, Sakura Pond gives it an atmosphere similar to Kenrokuen. There is a statue of Maeda Toshitsune, the third feudal lord of the Kaga domain. The park is barrier-free. It’s wonderful that a wide range of ages can enjoy it. Komatsu Castle once had multiple moats and was called a floating castle. It’s a luxury to have a waterfall in the park. I’ve had a lot of fun, so I’ll move on. This is Komatsu High School, formerly the Ninomaru. Going further, the former Honmaru is behind here. There is a monument at the site of the Honmaru. You can see the tower base. The stone walls were built using the inlay technique. Let’s walk around the perimeter. The corners are well-built with sanbogi masonry. Let’s go up the stairs. The Gosankai Tower once stood here. You can just see a plane taking off from Komatsu Airport. On the way back, we’ll go to see the Tokiwamon Gate, which has been relocated next to the elementary school. Thank you for watching.
