There are many places that have been renovated and become incredibly popular, such as Atami’s Kinomiya Shrine. Komae isn’t a tourist destination, so it might be difficult. The old torii gate we just passed through seems to be about 400 years old. Are they going to rebuild this? I wonder if it’s leaking due to aging. It’s apparently cheaper to rebuild than to repair it poorly. Even though it has a long history, maintaining the shrine costs money. 多摩川の流れに沿って、静かな東京・狛江市を歩く。海から24km離れたこの場所には、都市のざわめきとは異なる、暮らしの気配と時間の余白が流れている。住宅街を抜けると、鬱蒼とした木々の向こうに伊豆美神社が姿を現した。創建はおよそ1100年前。鳥居は今から400年ほど前のものという。風雨にさらされながらも立ち尽くすその姿には、言葉にできない重みがある。だが神社の維持は困難を極めるようで、境内には「本殿の建て替えにご寄付を」との貼紙が無造作に貼られていた。観光地でもない町の小さな社には、人が訪れる理由がなければ静かに風化していくしかない。それでも、この静けさの中にこそ、忘れられた日本の本質が息づいているように感じた。都市と自然、記憶と現実。その狭間を、今日もひとり歩いている。
