また、古くから山岳信仰の霊山として人々の信仰を集め、多くの僧が修行の場として利用してきた歴史も残されている。
毎年5月には、山一面を赤く染め上げるツツジの群生が見頃を迎えて、県内外から観光客が訪れる花の名所としても人気があり、山頂付近からは南三陸海岸の美しい風景も眺められます。
