Hey there! Today on YuruHoli, we’re setting off on a road trip from Yamagata City to the Shonai region. Now, we’re heading to the Sixteen Rakan Rocks in Fukuura, Yusa Town. Newly planted rice paddies stretch out around us, water rippling across their flooded surfaces. A quintessential Yamagata view at this time of year. As we get closer to the sea, the sky that had been overcast suddenly brightens. After about a two-hour drive, we arrived at the parking lot at our destination. Then, we were drawn to the soft-serve ice cream banner. It’s about a five-minute walk along the trail from the parking lot to the Sixteen Rakan Rocks. Since you’ll be walking on rocky terrain, it’s best that you wear sneakers. You can see the horizon. When you go up to the hill beyond the pedestrian bridge, you’ll find a world of light and wind. What are these two doing? The scenery is imbued with a divine aura. The sound of the waves gets closer. Footsteps gradually blend with the sound of the waves. Though it’s calm now, this sea can turn violently rough, keeping people away Two hundred years ago, persistent storms caused many to lose their lives in these waters. A monk mourned the lost lives and prayed for the safety of those left behind. He then spent fifteen years carving Buddhas into the coastal rocks. Sixteen Rakan Rocks. The Rakan have stood here, transcending two centuries, … And even now, they continue to gaze out at the coastline. We pause at the gazebo to catch our breath. Thanks to this gazebo. Carrying the lingering resonance of the Rakan Rocks in our hearts, we walk the verdant trail. Sorry for the blurry shot. You can loop around and return to the parking lot.
