❣️ We visited the Hyobaku Ice Festival in northern Daisetsuzan National Park.
Each year, ice sculptures are built along the Ishikari River in Sounkyo Gorge, using water sprayed from the river to freeze naturally. Some are reinforced with hidden frames under thick layers of ice.
By day, the ice is crystal-clear with a bluish tint; at night, it glows with soft colored lights, creating a calm, magical mood.
Temperatures reach -25°C to -30°C, so weather constantly reshapes the sculptures. There are also small snow slides for tubing.
Unlike large-scale festivals like in Chitose, Hyobaku is all about quiet winter beauty where nature takes the spotlight. It’s subtle, peaceful, and worth a visit for those seeking the true spirit of northern winter.
