大国主命・奴奈川姫・建御名方命を祀り、越後一宮とも呼ばれる延喜式内社。
代々、国司の厚い保護を受けてきました。親鸞聖人も上陸の際に一番に参ったといわれ、聖人にまつわる越後七不思議の第一番「片葉葦」が群生していることでも知られています。
鎌倉時代の作と推定される、市指定の文化財・木造狛犬や、年1回公開される、中世から近世にかけての居多神社文書（市指定文化財）が保管されています。

Kota Shrine in the Naoetsu district of Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, has long been known as a power spot for matchmaking, fertility, and safe childbirth. The chief priest of Kota Shrine, Hanagasaki Moriaki, said, “It is said that a couple who were having difficulty conceiving a child were able to have a child…”
It is a shrine listed in the Engishiki, which enshrines Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, Nunagawa-hime, and Takeminakata-no-Mikoto and is also known as Echigo Ichinomiya.
It has been protected by the provincial governor for generations. It is said that Saint Shinran was the first to visit the shrine when he landed, and it is also known for being the home of a cluster of “one-leaf reeds,” the first of the seven wonders of Echigo associated with the saint.
The shrine houses a wooden lion statue, a city-designated cultural property, believed to have been made in the Kamakura period, and Kota Shrine documents from the Middle Ages to the early modern period (city-designated cultural property), which are open to the public once a year.
