Hello everyone! I’m Naru! Today I’ve come to the healing waters of Shima Onsen, nestled in the mountains of Nakanojo Town, Gunma Prefecture! Shima Onsen, Kusatsu Onsen, and Ikaho Onsen are known as “Gunma’s Three Famous Hot Springs” Shima Onsen is about 45 minutes by car from Kusatsu and about 40 minutes by car from Ikaho Along the Shima River for about 4 km ryokans and public bathhouses are scattered throughout Shima Onsen It consists of five areas: Onsenaguchi, Yamaguchi, Shinyu, Yuzuriha, and Hinatagami These five areas make up the hot spring town! The Onsenaguchi area has “Shima’s Pothole Clusters” In the Shinyu area, there’s the historic ryokan “Sekizenkan,” rumored to be the model for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away” In the Hinatagami area, there’s the site of Shima Onsen’s origin legend “Omeiso no Yu” At the uppermost part, there’s a cobalt blue artificial lake “Oku-Shima Lake” created by the Shima River Dam You can fully enjoy the mystical Shima Blue with lakeside walking trails and canoe experiences It’s amazing! About access! From Tokyo: Ueno Station → Nakanojo Station: about 2 hours Tokyo Station → Nakanojo Station: about 2 hours 10 minutes by train transfers About 40 minutes by bus from Nakanojo Station By car: About 60 minutes from Shibukawa-Ikaho IC By express bus: Direct bus “Shima Onsen Go” from Tokyo Station, about 3 hours 30 minutes On the national highway to Shima Onsen
“Always With Me” from Spirited Away plays ♪ Today we’ve come to Shima Onsen in Gunma Prefecture! Right now, we’re at the top of the Shima River Dam! There were other activities too, like SUP I want to try that! SUP too They took lots of photos for us We bought those photos, so let’s look at them later! Do you know why it’s so blue? I don’t know… Very tiny particles in the water (aluminum silicate particles called “allophanes”) scatter sunlight, and the shorter wavelength blue light is scattered more strongly, creating the beautiful cobalt blue color! It’s the same principle that makes the sky look blue!! But there are different theories about this This isn’t necessarily the correct explanation The acidic water mixes with Shima Onsen hot spring water to create the blue color! There are all kinds of shops Smart Ball game and more! I’d like to try that! The retro feel is nice Smart Ball
500 yen per game Pull the lever to shoot balls
and try to get them into holes on the board! It’s hard to get them in… Now Masa will try!! They also had shooting games!
8 shots for 500 yen That was difficult! We didn’t hit anything… I didn’t really understand Smart Ball… It was difficult! Haha Maybe you need to play multiple times to get the hang of it? It’s challenging! I’m disappointed I failed at my specialty, the shooting game… You were so good before! The shooting was difficult too… You were amazing at Shibu Onsen Maybe it only works at Shibu Onsen! Haha Maybe I need that old man’s guidance to do well! Haha Without his advice, I can’t do well! Haha Ended up with disappointing results… 😂 It’s challenging! We’ve come to the Hinatagami district! About 3 minutes by car from Sekizenkan Besides the hot spring facility behind me you can see Hinatagami Yakushi-do Temple, a foot bath and the public bath “Omeiso no Yu”! This is considered to be the origin of Shima Onsen! Wow! Is that so? There are two origin stories for Shima Onsen 1. The Sakanoue no Tamuramaro theory 2. The Usui Sadamitsu theory This is the site of the Usui Sadamitsu theory! Usui Sadamitsu was constantly chanting sutras in this place! Then a deity appeared in his dream and said “Moved by your sincere devotion, I grant you a miraculous spring that cures 40,000 ailments. I am the local mountain deity.” Then, a hot spring actually emerged! The hot water sprang forth at the site of Omeiso no Yu! In gratitude, Usui Sadamitsu built this Yakushi-do Temple! So this is a place of great historical significance! It has a special atmosphere! Thank you for watching!

  1. Hello, I saw your sakura trail trip, and today just trying to search your channel, luckily you uploaded new video ! Also so lucky for you to be able to book the ryokan. Do you plan to do a trip to Shikoku?

Edit: also your video quality is so good, how long it took to edit the video, and how long was the trip?

  20. We like your Vlog, to have the blue color of noodle (烏東) should be very special taste. Hope to watch your Vlog weekly! And welcome to Taiwan in the future.
