■Kagura in Hiroshima Prefecture
Kagura is performed in many different ways in various parts of Japan. It is believed that the kagura in Hiroshima developed in the Edo period from Iwami Kagura, which had evolved from Izumo kagura. Izumo kagura is composed of ritual dances, which show the procedures to invite the advent of gods, and Noh dances, which dramatize the admiration of the virtues of gods in order to thank them for having descended from heaven. In the process of evolution, the kagura in this area was also influenced by Yahata kagura and Takachiho kagura in Kyushu and Bitchu kagura in Okayama as well as the old local beliefs of the farmers in the mountainous areas of the Chugoku region. The kagura in Hiroshima is strongly characterized by its dramatization. It has developed into a free and relaxed traditional performing art extremely popular among ordinary people. There are 300 kagura groups in Hiroshima Prefecture. The dancers, who are all amateurs, practice hard to improve their skills. They work or go to school during the daytime, but they play important roles, as volunteers, to preserve kagura. The popularization of kagura has greatly contributed to maintaining people’s faith in their shrines and deities and to perpetuating their ancestors’ awe and reverence for the threats and blessings of the nature and deities. In the process of dramatization, the kagura in Hiroshima has not lost the archetype of kagura, in which deities and humans come together and enjoy themselves.

■■Iwami Kagura
The Iwami region in Shimane Prefecture is home to an ancient ritual imbued with the vibrant spirit of the local community. Experience the unique spectacle that is Iwami Kagura, both a treasured tradition and a beloved part of everyday life.

■Popular Culture and Proud Tradition
Iwami Kagura is a form of kagura from the Iwami region, in western Shimane. Kagura began as a religious ritual, usually involving song and dance, performed in dedication to Shinto gods. Each ritual also tells a story, usually from Japanese mythology. Many regions of Japan have their own forms of kagura but Iwami Kagura really stands apart.

Unlike other variations of kagura or even traditional theater, which can seem inaccessible or exclusive, Iwami Kagura has evolved with the times, incorporating elements like pyrotechnics and smoke machines. There’s also nothing stuffy about the dramatic dancing, riveting musical accompaniment and flamboyant costumes. Performances are mostly held at local shrines, usually for 1,000 yen or less. It’s also normal to enjoy a beer or a snack in many venues (yes, even shrines). As a result, Iwami Kagura is firmly embedded in local, everyday culture.
