日勝峠展望台(秋) Nissho Pass Observatory in Autumn
北海道の日勝峠は、西側の沙流郡日高町と東側の上川郡清水町の境界にある。北海道の地形は中央を日高山脈から大雪山連邦までの標高1,500ｍ以上の山地によって東西に分けられており、道路で結ぼうとすると、必ず峠を越えなくてなならない。地元に暮らす人々にとって日高町と清水町を結ぶ道路は明治時代からの悲願であった。明治14年(1881年）には現在の日高町から道東への路線選定の最初の現地踏査が入り、大正9年(1920年)、昭和22年(1947年)にも本格的踏査が行われ、昭和27年(1952年)に全線に渡って測量が完了した。昭和29年(1954年)9月の台風15号(洞爺丸台風)によって日高地方の森林が約100万本がなぎ倒され、その倒木を運び出す必要もあり開削工事が開始される事となる。日高町側からは昭和30年(1955年)、清水町側からは昭和34年(1959年)から着手され、昭和40年(1965年)10月に全線が開通した。10月15日の開通式の朝は前日までの大雨がおさまり、テープカットの瞬間、雨雲から陽が射し込む中で午前10時からのパレードがスタートされたと記録されている。この開通によって札幌市から十勝地方を結ぶ主なルートであった狩勝峠超えより約43km、襟裳岬周りよりも約130km短縮された。
Nissho Pass is on the border between the towns of Hidaka and Shimizu, separated by the Hidaka Mountains in Hokkaido. Construction began in 1955 from Hidaka on the west side, and in 1959 from Shimizu on the east side, and it was opened in 1965. This opening shortened the route by about 43km from the previous shortest distance. From the observation deck halfway up the pass, you can see the vast rural landscape of the Tokachi Plain.
