【Driving in Japan】National Route 139 : Otsuki, Yamanashi – Okutama, Tokyo [Insta 360 Ace Pro 4K60P]
National Route 139 is a general national highway that runs from Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, through Yamanashi Prefecture to Okutama Town, Tokyo.
This route runs in a semi-circle around the western foot of Mt. Fuji. Along the way, you can see the Asagiri Plateau at the foot of the western foot of Mt. Fuji, the scenic Fuji Five Lakes including Lake Kawaguchi, and the Aokigahara Jukai forest formed by volcanic activity of Mt. Fuji, making it a great way to enjoy the charms of Mt. Fuji.
This time, I drove the entire route. Since it took a long time to shoot, I will release it in four parts.
The last release is the section from Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture to Okutama Town, Tokyo. This section is completely different from the previous sections of this route, and runs through sparsely populated mountainous areas.
This section was incorporated into National Route 139 in April 1993, and until then it had been in service as the Yamanashi Prefectural Route and Tokyo Prefectural Route Otsuki Okutama Line. Since it has only been a national route for a short time, road improvements have been delayed and narrow sections remain. However, the 3,066m Matsuhime Tunnel was opened in 2014, and road conditions have improved significantly.
Finally, the route leaves Yamanashi Prefecture and enters Tokyo, where it crosses the Tama River (Lake Okutama) and joins National Route 411 (Ome Kaido).

国道139号のこちらの区間は、山越えがメインなので交通量は少なく、また狭隘区間が多く残っていたりして、酷道といえるような走りにくい箇所がまだまだありますね。
改良があまり進んでいないと思いきやそんなことはなく、数年前に松姫トンネルのバイパスが開通したり、他の場所でも新たなトンネルを掘削したり何ヶ所かで部分的に改良工事が行われている最中なので、いずれも早期開通が待たれます。小菅村役場前のＴ字路付近も少し拡幅改良がされたみたいですね。
余談ですが、山梨県の北東部に位置している小菅村と丹波山村は、地形的にもどちらかといえば東京都側との結びつきが強く、主に東京都民の為の水源でもある多摩川上流域にある関係で、村内に東京都水道局の支所が置かれていたりします。
他にもこの２つの村は、路線バスは八王子が拠点の「西東京バス」がメインだったり、電話番号が主に東京多摩地区や神奈川県相模原市等で使われている「042」から始まる市外局番だったりします。
